Rock n Roll w/Strings
While my original post was headed a different way, the ELO responses are most welcome. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about their use of strings, but I'd agree that IMHO Jeff Lynne is definitely a top tier Brian Wilson - Lennon/MacCa songwriting ...
Hooking up 2 separate amps to 2 different outputs
Add an attenuator (passive pre) to the fixed level output (ahead of the amp) and you should be good to. I used to take the coax digital signal from my Music server and run it into a dac and then on into the pre in my main system. At the same time,...
Small speakers...big sound??
You might look for a used pair of the (long discontinued) Red Rose ribbon monitor. A shoebox with a midbass hump that sounds much bigger than you'd ever imagine. Not exactly neutral, but they might fit you needsMarty
Lou Reed/Metallica "Lulu" just awful
ChadFor the record - again - I never said that the record was intentionally bad. I said that, I, too had heard the story that it was deliberately bad and that Lou Reed continues to deny that it was deliberately bad. I don't know whether it was a m...
Rock n Roll w/Strings
Thanks all for the responses. They've certainly covered a lot of ground!MartyPS Maxnewid - thanks for the heads up on Room of Songs. I thought that I owned everything Alejandro has ever recorded, but I must have missed that one somehow.
SOTA processors also bang for the buck
Kal,I'll ask for a more specific answer next time I speak to him, but the tech who advised me hinted at "substantially identical" as I recall. He never flat out said it, though.I do remember that he mentioned a few small differences, and he kind o...
Subwoofer Suggestions ?
I'd think that - in your room - two well designed (important!) 12" subwoofers should do the trick very nicely. My pair of 12" Rythmik f-12s (each w/370 watt amp) in a similar sized room are set at very low levels so that each can produce the 75db ...
Lou Reed/Metallica "Lulu" just awful
I like a lot of the Velvet's material - and I suspect that it was really influential for guys like Brian Eno and the others who started the process of "abstracting" the r'n'r backbeat for more than momentum and urgency. I also like Reed's first so...
best phono preamp under 500?
Lehmann black cube is worth a look. No longer
SOTA processors also bang for the buck
OTOH, refurbed 80.2 pre-pros are now available locally for $1300. It just might be worth learning to love that mug at that price.Marty
SOTA processors also bang for the buck
Kal,That is essentially the advice I got from a guy who spends his days wandering around inside both products.MartyPS - For my money, the Onkyo has a purtier face, too.
Lyngdorf RP-1
Historically I've been analog, tubes and dynamic speakers. Oracle/Graham/Graham to ARC LS25 to ARC VT130 SE to Merlin VSM or Verity Parsifal. Then, a combination of a touch screen music server and a new home with a difficult music room began my tr...
Hi Fi Dealers in NYC - where to find them?
It's been years, but Singer and Lyric were always about qualifying the customer. As several have recommended above, wearing $400 shoes will go a long way towards getting you good service at either place. Lyric was famous for guarding the vault. In...
SOTA processors also bang for the buck
I actually listened to both the Denon (with its internal amps - and also as a pre) and the Integra 80.2 (in the end, as an Onkyo stand-in), but couldn't offer a meaningful comparative judgement, because it was different dealers, rooms, systems, et...
