Is New Vinyl Exempt from Loudness Wars?
ct0517-Understand, I had nothing to do with the production of that album. (Also, Natalie Merchant is not on it...) But why would it probably not work on an LP? The short answer is that CDs are a playback medium that is altogether superior to the L...
Is New Vinyl Exempt from Loudness Wars?
I'm not at all surprised by ct0517's finding of Natalie Merchant's work. I've never worked with Natalie, but I've known her in passing and also know several of the people she works with rather well. They all are VERY aware of their sound and the t...
Is New Vinyl Exempt from Loudness Wars?
Speaking as someone who masters for production, I can tell you that, broadly, everything said above is true. Essentially, it is all in the mastering, and there is no reliable way to tell if a given LP has been mastered appropriately for that mediu...
Thiel Owners
How about Thiel 2 2s (no decimal point)? Mine are 20(!) years old now, and whenever I hear another pair of speakers that sound really good, I go back and listen to the 2 2s, and realize that, nah, it really doesn't get much better than this, at le...
Phono Stage with Two Line-outs
The user's manual for the M1-ViNL is silent concerning simultaneous use of both the balanced and unbalanced outputs. There is no switching provision. But one reviewer noted this: "There are both single-ended and balanced outputs, the latter genera...
Phone stage for VPI Scout 1.1
The new Musical Fidelity MX-VINL has caught my eye and looks very much like a winner @ $999. I've been highly satisfied with its predecessor, the M1-ViNL, along with a VPI Scout Signature with SDS speed control and Shure M97xE with a JICO SAS styl...
Phono Stage with Two Line-outs
If I understand your requirements correctly, the new Musical Fidelity MX-VINL may very well meet your requirements precisely. It supports two separate switch-selectable phono inputs, one balanced (Mini-XLR/DIN) and one unbalanced (RCA), and also f...
sound-Smith VPI Counter Intuitive
OK, I did take a closer look, it's been a while, and the others are quite correct. It includes that plastic sleeve that goes over the counterweight. That must up the cost of production to at least $2.50, so it's rather less absurdly priced. It sti...
sound-Smith VPI Counter Intuitive
Yup. The SoundSmith Counter Intuitive works very well, and, like pretty much all things VPI, it's absurdly overpriced @ $50 for a 50ยข sticker. It should be a stock feature of the already overpriced VPI turntables.
Spin Clean seems to add noise to records?
I have both a Spin Clean and a Nitty Gritty. Both work fine and, while the Nitty Gritty may well do a somewhat better job overall, certainly the Spin Clean is more "economically efficient." Sliding the LP between the two cleaning pads on the Spin ...
currently own a vpi scout, looking to upgrade
@Islandmandan:My opinion is that most of the upgrades offered by VPI are overpriced. Now, ain't THAT the truth!
currently own a vpi scout, looking to upgrade
My experience as a long-time VPI Scout Signature owner strongly suggests that the most effective upgrade would not be a new TT, but rather a VPI SDS motor controller (highly worthwhile!). Assuming your speakers and amp(s) are top-of-the-line, othe...
What is the best DAC under $3000
The "best" DAC under 3 kilobucks? If you can find it, quite possibly the new Mytek Digital Stereo192-DSD-DAC @ $1600. Mytek has for years been one of the most respected names in professional studio ADCs and DACs. I use them myself. The unit is app...
LP to CD format anyone ...
I've been doing this for about 17 years now, and have gone from a simple consumer-grade setup to a full-on professional studio rig doing transfers & remasters for commercial release. Things I tell anyone is that there are few to no shortcuts, ...
24/192 Big Improvement Over 24/96????
Bifwynne, and the paper at the xiph link he gives, is precisely correct. Formats for playback at a bit depth & sample rate higher than 16/44.1 do not and can not sound *intrinsicly* one bit (pun intended) better to human hearing. In fact, they...
