BEST INTERCONNECT FOR $25 EACH? Why use unshielded cables? You're going to have all those IC's next to power cords (which may or my not be shielded), transformers, and the AC lines into the receptacles. Possible RFI and EMI.
Tube recommendations @infection , Brimars are not as warm as Mullards, that's why I like them. What makes Mullards so special is that adding a premium NOS can make music sound holographic when combined with the right set of tubes. (these are the expensive Mullards).Br...
Got a line on NOS tubes Find out if he has a tube tester. It would have been necessary in that business. Before you install any tubes, you'll need to test them for different parameters, such as voltage and leaks. Also, most preamps and amps need to use matching tubes.
Tube recommendations Excellent comments, @mechans .Very true about Andy and Brimar, he's knowledgeable and honest, but there are certain tubes he won't sell. I placed an order recently and went elsewhere for the Brimar I wanted. Really outstanding tubes.
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs I'd like to comment on SQ of some of the CD's listed. The Karajan New Years Concert was mentioned. First some history; Deutsche Grammophon's digital recordings from the 1980's are far from good sound quality. Sound was dry, harsh, and their techni...
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs Solti's Beethoven #9 from 1972 on London Records (remastered) is a masterpiece. The sound quality is very good for a recording from that era, but the performance is unlike any other 9th...and superior to his later digital release. I usually prefe...
Recommendations for a few high SQ classical CDs I would label Mahler's 1st as an introduction to Mahler, or "Mahler 101." It's a very good composition, but doesn't show the genius of his later works. A very good quality 1st is Riccardo Muti with the Philadelphia Orchestra on EMI.I like symphoni...
Tube recommendations 6H23 is a Russian tube type but a 6992 can be substituted. These tubes are very revealing and have an extended top-end. With a phonostage it's important to get tubes that are low-noise and tested for microphonics. The 6992 is a tube that can bec...
Which Nakamichi to choose? Great info, @cleeds . And the term archive is a misnomer. My plan was to make high quality copies of albums that can be listened to without the time and effort of playing vinyl. I agree that R-R is an amazing format even today, but requires mone...
Tube pre amp What is your budget?Sonic characteristics such as soundstage, detail, realism are determined by the specific design and also the type of tubes used in the circuit. Many great used tube pre's for sale.
Which Nakamichi to choose? Thanks, @terry9 . I still have my notes on the various Nak models when I was looking to buy. I worked in studios and am very familiar with how quiet R-R and cassette can be. I'd like to try transferring CD's to a high-end cassette deck; I know ana...
Is APower Conditioner For A Mostly Vintage System Worth Getting? Wiremold is the way to go for power strips. They are transparent and non-current limiting. I have the same strip that jond posted except mine includes a circuit breaker.but thinking a power component might be nice here or will the power strip suff...
Which Nakamichi to choose? Thanks for that info, @tls49 . I still love analogue tape and have considered a used Nak to archive vinyl. Was Dolby C of any use on the Naks?
Which Nakamichi to choose? @terry9 , the CR-7a must be like "studio quality," (I realise we're talking cassettes).Would Dolby B on a stock CR-7 effectively reduce noise w/o limiting sonics?
Which Nakamichi to choose? @jond , I agree with you; I tried it and decided against using it. I think everybody back in the day tried it and came to the same conclusion. I still have tapes that I recorded with "Dolby On." |
