Audio Research SP3-a1
That does seem excessive. It has only cost a few hundred dollars both times I sent pieces to ARC. I agree, would put it in the closet. For that kind of money you can get a much better preamp.  The LS2 and LS2 mk2 would not be on my list. I had...
Audio Research SP3-a1
ARC does not charge excessively for repairs. What did they say was wrong with it? A unit this old may have a number of issues but ARC will go through it with a fine tooth comb. It is worth the cost. Has your unit been "modified"? If so ARC will i...
Suggestions for streamer in bedroom system
You really need to hard wire the streamer or get one with storage.  The Bluesound is a very nice streamer and there is a version with storage. Just copy your music file on to the internal hard drive. If you want to an external DAC, I believe it h...
Auditioning Magnepan MMGi's and 1.7i's (and possibly the 3.7i's) on Monday
If the dealer you are going to visit is Audio Consultants, I would not judge the speakers on just what you hear. They are notorious for not setting demo speakers up properly. Maggies can be excellent sounding speakers with proper setup and amplif...
Audio Research VS110 Middle transformer gets very hot the 2 sides not so is this normal
Unless the middle transformer is getting really hot I would not worry. If you can touch the top you should be OK. The middle transformer is the power transformer for both channels while the other two transformers are channel specific. Notice how ...
Getting into Tube Equipment
If I were you I would take my time and listen. Go to dealers and listen to different brands and pieces. Listen to everything you can. Even if it is more than you would spend.. Most brands have a house sound. You will get a better feel for wha...
Getting into Tube Equipment
Unless you get an integrated amp, you will need a preamp. This is separate from your phono preamp. Maybe a solid state integrated with tube phono stage would be the way to go. I had both an Dynaco ST-70 (which is only 35 watts per channel and Mar...
Strange Noise from PrimaLuna DiaLogue One
If your  PrimaLuna is around 8 years old it is no longer under warranty. I would have a local tech take a look at it. If you don't know a good one, your dealer may have a suggestion. Since the hum is in both channels my guess is that the problem ...
Strange Noise from PrimaLuna DiaLogue One
I don't think you are getting the most from your Elipsa SE with the  PrimaLuna DiaLogue One. The Elipsa SE really need more power to sound their best. I use an Audio Research Ref 110 to drive my Elipsa SE. I think around 100 wpc is a good startin...
Luxman vs Pass Labs
I think that you are comparing apples to oranges. I would look at these two Pass pieces individually. The Pass  XA 30.5 is an excellent sounding amplifier. I was not impressed with the XP10. The 2 people I know that have Pass amps don't have Pas...
Future of Analog Technology Media
HD Vinyl looks interesting and you can play it on your current analog setuphttps://hdvinyl.org/
Audio Research REF 3 and REF 5 Tweaks
Hmmmm, I'm not sure that's true. It's certainly not mentioned in any of the ARC owner's manuals that I've seen. It would also pose a potential shock hazard so it's a hard practice to recommend - even if some users with no children or pets do it ...
Tube temperature for ARC Ref 6
Everything seems slightly more solid with more air as I remember. It has been quite awhile. I know people that have put them on 6550 tubes but I have not. tried  Only you can decide if they are worth the cost..
Audio Research REF 3 and REF 5 Tweaks
ARC use to recommend no cover. before they introduced the Plexi covers. The problem is that the Plexi cover will start to melt over time and dip slightly above the 6550 tube if you leave in on for long periods. There is no way that the Plexi cov...
Tube temperature for ARC Ref 6
I use the UltraSonic Rx-9 on all the 6H30 tubes in my system with great results. I have had them for years and they still look just like new. I don't use a tube damper on the 6550 tubes.
