Anyone hear Robert Plant's new release, Carry Fire?
tbone's (self titled) record, "t-bone burnett," recorded live in the studio, is one of the best-sounding records i've heard. as for daniel lanois, i generally agree with bdp--he tends to cover everything with a brooding murk that often ill-suits a...
Anyone hear Robert Plant's new release, Carry Fire?
supposedly he produced it himself, but it reminds me of a daniel lanois record--sorta veiled, gauzy and "atmospheric".  i thought it sounded good, though the songs aren't as distinctive as his "raising sand" and his voice has clearly lost the uppe...
Tune of the Day
the byrds, "if you're gone"--an obscure gene clark song buried on the second side of "turn turn turn."  it's a very  haunting melody with mcguinn's droning, jangly, almost eastern-sounding guitar and deceptively simple, poetic lyrics. clark had a ...
Integrateds: Why do they all SUCK?
the original poster must be very pleased to have gotten so many responses to his grasp for attention
Chromecast and external DAC
thanks, kalali. sorta what i expected--that little chromecast w/optical is still a helluva cheap thrill
Chromecast and external DAC
kalalai, i'd actually be curious to hear how the chrome compares to the node in the same syetme--if you want to take one for the team, let us know...
Bookshelf speakers that sound good on a SHELF or SIDEBOARD
rega rs1 is impervious to placement; likewise the pricier paradigm sign s1
Anyone running a Sumiko S-10 subwoofer for music? Impressions? How about Hsu ULS-15?
his room was fairly large--i'd guesstimate 15 x 18 with fairly high ceilings. he has only one sub and his is a music only system (not movies)
Anyone running a Sumiko S-10 subwoofer for music? Impressions? How about Hsu ULS-15?
my good friend recently got the s-10 to use with his magnepan 3.7s and i was genuinely impressed--the sumiko was very fast and integrated pretty seamlessly; seemed like good value. i haven't heard the hsu.
Why are there no botique car audio recievers?
bondmanp, i share your pain--the bose system jacks up my otherwise excellent maxima. i've also looked into the aftermarket mods you refer to--they're very costly, tho i'm certainly tempted. the fender system in my wife's current vw, otoh, is reall...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
reubent, i'd offer the following:1. song for song, i'd say this year's model is the strongest, esp. the deluxe version, which has great obscurities like big tears and tiny steps. on a certain level, i think the playing's great, esp. the  thomases ...

bdp's comments on Kof A are well-observed--other EC records have a stronger set of songs top-to-bottom but do tend to sound over-polished, while this one has a natural swing. "Brilliant Mistake" and "Indoor Fireworks" are among his very best ever.
Please , Thank you.Help in choosing a CD or a CD/Universal player
decidely a minority view, but i don't really like my oppo 103 for cds, although its certainly an impressive dvd player and streamer; for cds i  preferred the pioneer elite 79avi it replaced. unless you need bluray, i would actually look at somethi...
Chromecast and external DAC
just got a chromecast and am using it (through its mini optical) with a mf vdac--as willemj states its digital output is very clean and noticeably better than the not-bad analogue output. if you already have an optical cable, a mini adapter costs ...
How do SVS subwoofers compare to REL?
wolf, i might well fall into the lazy reviewer camp (and we might be getting into a semantic debate), but i find "speed" a useful  description for a sub--to me a fast sub connotes absence of bloat and decay; likewise the ability to react to the si...
