CD/SACD Player that is at least as good as OPPO BDP 103D i have a 103, too, and while it's very good for streaming and video i've never been impressed with it as a cd player--my buddy's 95 is much better, as are my arcam 73 and sony es players. for a grand i think there's much better choices.
ProJect Pre BOX S2 as preamp looks like a lot of gear for $399--haven't heard, but previously used a project head box and was impressed with the build and sonics, esp. at the price--very uncolored and clean-sounding
Pet Sounds: Most Overrated Album of All Time? it's a great record, but for me a bit monochromatic in mood and tempo to be considered the GOAT. my main issue is for all the ambitious arrangements it's always sounded compressed and a bit off to me--it just doesn't have the dynamic oomph of say...
ADS L 520 i still run a pair of l520s in my basement and love 'em--very resolving tweeter and great bass for such a small speaker. also very efficient and easy to drive--as stated above they're a different animal than the heresy, but i'd grab 'em for $50
Acceptable speaker hum from integrated or sign of impending failure? my guess is that if it's audible within the chassis that it's more likely a problem with the internals of the unit itself (loose transformer, failing power supply, caps, etc.) than with the ground or power, but it could be a number of things. i c...
Acceptable speaker hum from integrated or sign of impending failure? often the hum is caused by a transformer which has loosened and starts vibrating--i've cured it by opening the chassis and screwing down the transformer (make sure you keep the unit unplugged for a day or so before you do so). if it's some sort of...
Do any of your Rolling Stones recordings bring "Satisfaction"? the earlier, andrew loog oldham-helmed records were sonic messes--he was more of an impressario than a producer. their classic jimmy miller/glyn johns records--beggars banquet/sticky fingers/let it bleed records sound great to me, as does some gir...
Is There a Speaker for Me/Impossible Requirements? (budget: $2000) the kestrels are an excellent speaker, esp. for the money. i'm sure you'll find the harbeth or some of the other above to be more resolving for your type of music, but the difference may not be cost-effective. fwiw, i didn't find the spendor 3/5 t...
Input From PSB Owners i use the synchrony 2b in my office and rate them just a notch above the also-good imagine--the synchrony have just a bit more oomph and a very smooth high end. not a massive difference, but definitely a speaker i'd recommend without reservation.
Chinese fake cables How fake, how good? there are two separate questions here--first the morality of buying chinese knockoffs and second the quality of said knockoffs. i don't address the first question, but from my experience these products, whether audio, handbags or watches, are f...
Tight bass sub recommendations martin logan dynamo is a really fast, tight sub which should pair well with the maggies--very good value used.
Need Help with Voltage for Integrated ruebent, i'll do exactly what you suggest--i'm 99% sure you're correct. thanks.
Any experience with this amplifier? likewise i have no experience with it; however fwiw a very knowledgeable friend of mine took a flyer on a chinese naim clone amp for around $250 and was actually pretty impressed. there are also a lot of quad450 clones on the market--they are skil...
Beach Boys Pet Sounds by Analogue Productions i agree 100% with bdp--for all the acclaim pet sounds always sounded compressed and bad to me, with notably thin low end. brilliant songs, however.
Modestly priced bookshelf speakers for cabin. n80, you've gotten some good suggestions like the acoustic energy and klipsch quartet (if you have the space); my personal recommendation would be to look for a good 80s speaker like the ads l520, which are easy to find <$200 and sound shocking... |
