midway still--i won't try--previously unknown to me, these guys sound exactly like the lemonheads. which, since i like the lemonheads, is a good thing. ed kuepper--electrical storm--dark, brooding and tuneful as hell matthew sweet--sunshine lies...

per the above, the veritas speakers from the late 90s/early 00s were seriously good--from what little i've heard the recent iterations not so much. for your budget i'd look at used proac, dynaudio, focal...

i always thought the records were underrated as a guitar band, and i prefer their (marginally) harder edged second  record (plus i can't listen to "teenarama" without cringing). on my queue, in the same vein: richard x. heyman, cornerstone myra...

i believe the harbeths are hard to drive, so i'd look at the peachtree nova 150, which is small and powerful

Possibly transformer hum...unplug the unit for a day or two, open it and try tightening the screw in the middle of the transformer

bkeske, i was just listening to notorious byrd bros. as well--easily their best even if  "space oddysey" sounds a bit dated. i just learned that "get to you" was miscredited on the record and is actually a gene clark song. ruebent, your frontier ...

fwiw i've used the 80txv in my bedroom for over 12 years--it still works flawlessly and sounds surprisingly good, with more power than you'd expect. $250 does seem pricey for it but it's a good piece. of the others, i think the 94txh was their tot...
