Rachmaninov for beginners
Would also add that Symphonies 1 and 3 with Janssons are excellent, and the new Hough complete piano concertos on Hyperion is superb, if you are looking for a complete set.
Rachmaninov for beginners
You would also do well to try the Symphonic Dances (the marvelous Reference Recordings disc is a great choice, but there are several others that are worth getting). In addition, the Second Symphony is terrific - many great recordings of that work,...
Status = Dorian Acquires Reference Recordings
Dorian and Reference are both in bankruptcy. Too bad...

Quality recorded opera performances
The new recording of Marriage of Figaro on Harmonia Mundi is a great recording, but it's also a great piece, so I don't know if you are interested.
Classical music recordings upgrade
Per Vvrinc: Norrington's NEW set on Hanssler Classic also ranks up there with the best. It still has the HIP sound, but MUCH better played and conducted than his earlier set (which is still available on Virgin Classics). That's definitely worth he...
Classical music recordings upgrade
For complete sets:Barenboim, Berlin Staatskapelle on Teldec, the 1963 Karjan cycle on DG, the Bohm cycle on DG, and the Wand set on RCA are my favorites.
Carmina Burana - I need a good CD
The Telarc recording with Donald Runnicles and Atlanta SO is about as big as it gets, and one of the best versions on disc.
Initiation Rites

Mozart Piano Concertos 20 & 21
I've always liked the Perahia recordings on Sony/CBS.
Getting into Opera... need advice
You should try Debussy's "Pelleas et Melisande". Melancholy, introspective and absolutely gorgeous in every way. Several to choose from -- Boulez, Karajan, Abbado, Desormiere, Ansermet.
beethoven string quartets
You might also want to consider the Budapest Quartet, in various incarnations on Sony.
TEAC Esoteric DV-50 vs EMC, AUDIOMECA MEPHISTO
I have the latest combo as well. Mephisto II X and Enkianthus X. I got to know 'Meca through their inexpensive Obsession player and I was so impressed and bought the top of the line separates. Inquisitive A'goners will wonder, then, why I've had m...
TEAC Esoteric DV-50 vs EMC, AUDIOMECA MEPHISTO
I have both. The 'Meca is better for redbook, hands down. Much better transport as well.
Classical question
Koechel, signified for Mozart's works.
