Tube or solid state
I like, and own, tube gear.  The amp, more than anything, determines the sound.  I think one should find the right tube amp first, and then use whatever linestage you have.  My preference, again will be tubed, but, the choice isn’t quite as critic...
Is there a 300B type amp out there with some WATTS behind it?
There is a particular amount of power any given tube type can deliver.  If you push a tube harder to deliver more power, you compromise other aspects of performance, particularly the life of the tube.  Tube life can be dramatically longer if a tub...
can you please help me around how to use my first tube amp?
While a visual inspection  of the inside of the amp is helpful, one sort of needs experience to spot a burnt resistor or a bulging capacitor or other visual signs of distress.  Having access to a tube tester is also nice, but decent ones are not c...
SET Distortion at higher volumes?
It would help to know a lot more specific details, like the amp in question, the speakers, how large the room, how loud you are trying to play the system, whether you tested the system with a different amp, etc.  Just knowing that a speaker is rat...
Audio Note Amplifier Kits
Long ago, ANK and Audio Note were more closely affiliated.  Now, the kit company makes electronics based on Audio Note designs and uses the parts thaat Audio Note sells to the public.  I don't believe they have access to the highest grade transfor...
Heist/ crime songs
For a small crime, I like John Hiatt's "Trudy and Dave."
Speakers that are good with tubes
With high powered tube amps, I don't think there are many restrictions on what speakers can be used with the amp.  The issue with low impedance speakers has to do with the interaction between the amp output impedance and the impedance of the speak...
How long does it take a decent quality speaker to "wear out"?
The life expectancy of electrostatic panels depend on the specific models and operating conditions.  The Martin Logan panels do not arc and they do not develop holes in the diaphragm from arcing.  In that respect the panels are MUCH more durable t...
How long does it take a decent quality speaker to "wear out"?
Durability and lifetime depends on specific design.  I have heard speakers with 70 year old drivers that sound terrific.  Paper woofers with pleated fabric surrounds can be quite durable compared to even modern woofers with rubber surrounds.  My m...
New MOFI speaker (Andrew Jones)
This is not an expensive speaker so there has to be some compromises on parts quality.  But, I heard the speaker and it sounds quite good to me and I think it is quite nice looking to boot. Unless one has heard it and seen it, I don’t see how one ...

Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
In addition to the damage issue, the loss of a demo model while a speaker is being used in a home trial, the main problem is that most customers cannot take a speaker home for  quick trial that is fair--it takes a lot of experience, experimentatio...
Opinions on A/C Noise Meter EMI Testers
A local dealer has a plug in device that gives a numeric readout of undefined scale or meaning, but is helpful in determining the rough scale of noise problems and how much each change has improved the conditions.  It has a speaker that also outpu...
All New Treehaus Audiolab Phantom Of Luxury Open-Baffle FIELD COIL Loudspeakers Review
I heard the Treehaus speaker with the rebuilt fieldcoil driver.  It sounded okay, and looked fantastic, but I have heard other speakers with field coil drivers in similar applications that sounded better to me.     Both the V1 and V2 Songers soun...
Convincing your local dealer to let you try speakers at home
I can borrow anything because of long-standing relationships.  But, if I were a dealer I would not let anyone borrow gear for an audition.  These days, people audition stuff with no intention of buying--they try dealer gear and then go looking for...
