What do you know about a WESTERN ELECTRIC 86-A amp ??
Wow! A 9 out of 10 condition rating on something that has not been plugged in.  It goes to show how low the price can be on an untested amp.  I would expect another zero to the price of a good working example.
What do you know about a WESTERN ELECTRIC 86-A amp ??
A couple more thoughts.  While it would have been a welcome miracle if the tubes were 300A’s, any original 300B in working order will also be valuable.  The engraved-base 300B’s from the 1930s can go for $20,000 a pair. if you decide to sell the ...
What do you know about a WESTERN ELECTRIC 86-A amp ??
The amp, regardless of tubes in it, is extremely valuable.  If you don’t know how to check it out, find someone who can inspect it, slowly reform the caps with a variac, and test the tubes, etc.  It will be worth much more if you can confirm that ...
What do you know about a WESTERN ELECTRIC 86-A amp ??
I believe that a local dealer put two reconditioned 86 amps into an ultra expensive system.  I heard the amps playing in a different horn-based system at the dealership.  This dealer has a number of other Western Electric 300B amps, so I am not ce...
KEF LS50 Wireless II vs. Harbeth P3esr
You could turn the Croft on early in the day and leave it on until you are done for the day  The solid state portion may take some time to warm up, but, it will still be very listenable after a short warm up.  The tube portion will warm up much fa...
Suggestions please. Your favorite 3, 12ax7 tubes
For a warm sounding tube, I like Amperex Blueboy ECC83/12AX7.  For something a little leaner , but very clear and dynamic, I like Telefunken ECC803S.  For my phono stage, I run the ECC803S.  These vintage tubes are, unfortunately, very expensive.
Tube microphonics
Just because a tube pings if you tap it does not mean it will sound bad.  Mild microphonics is not a problem.  I’ve heard tube trials where the best sounding tubes happen to be microphonic (the tubes were 310A’s).
Why is Audiogon insisting on a verified physical address in order to post?

Where to insert tubes while running a Luxman SS integrated
I don’t subscribe to the notion that you can sprinkle in some tube flavoring and get a substantial improvement in sound.  The fundamental electrical component that matters most, and will determine the basic kind of sound one will have is the power...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
The mystery is particularly odd because the noise cannot be detected by the repair shops, but you hear it when the amp is in different systems and when you were located in different states.  Because you hear the sound immediately, it is not the ca...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
Have you tried tightening the sockets for the left channel?  It could be a loose or bad socket causing that kind of noise.  If you are handy, you can try reflowing solder joints for the left channel.  A friend hunts down noise by touching joints w...
Is My Tube Amp Unfixable? Help Needed
If it only happens in your system, could it be something upstream?  Try shorting plugs on the input and see if there is still popping sound from your speakers.  Does the sound increase when you increase the volume from your linestage?  If it does,...
Listen to a CD or LP in showroom?
This discussion reminds me of the HBO show "The Rehearsal" where someone reproduces, with stunning detail, exact copies of various venues so that the client can practice a social interaction. I don't see how ANY dealership now, or in the past, ca...
Listen to a CD or LP in showroom?
It means District (Washington, D.C.), Maryland, Northern Virginia (i.e., D.C. and its suburbs).
Simple question, probably stupid
The point we are trying to make is—burn them in by enjoying them.  They should not sound horrible in the process.  It will also add to your knowledge if you listen to the process instead of just using the tubes as room heaters.
