Single ended Power amp recommendation
I had a pair of Quartettes for a short while before trading up to the older model of the J2001 (twin). The Quartettes do certain things that few speakers outside of big horn systems and old Western Electric 755-based systems can do. In particular,...
Will Wadio ever make an SACD player?
Rob,The comment that Wadia does not see any point to SACD is interesting. That apparently is the opinion of the Theta people as well. In the manufacturer's comment to Stereophile's review of the Theta Generation VIII DAC, the manufacturer noted th...
Best and Worst sound at the CES Show 2004
Yes, they were playing a $1400 integrated amp. Sorry, but I don't recall what speakers they had coupled to the amp. This was a very good bargain system, one of the best at CES. The other bargain systems I like were the Consonance electronics with ...
Looking for best CD or Dac under $15k new.
I will ditto the CDS3 suggestion. I have this player. It does a terrific job of presenting instruments with real "body" and substance. While I like the big, airy and open soundstage presented by some SACD machines, most do not have the weight and ...
Single vs Multiple driver loudspeakers...
I've had the pleasure of hearing a pair of Overkill speakers that utilize a manger driver plus a conventional dynamic woofer. The manger driver sounds terrific -- very dynamic and clear sounding. The only significant downside was a touch of hardne...
Help - Mark Levinson Owners
I have found that a really top-flight power cord is not necessary for my Ref. No. 32. I use a decent Essence cord, but substituting a Shunyata did not make that much of a difference (then again, the front end is plugged into a Hydra). I may be the...
Single vs Multiple driver loudspeakers...
I've heard numerous Lowther designs and some single driver or multiple driver speakers using full-range Western Electric 755 and 756 drivers. These are interesting speakers that have an immediacy and liveliness that are almost unmatchable.Still, t...
DarTZeel NHB-108 Is this the best amp ever?
Wow! Another best ever amp. I am interested in hearing the DarTZeel, but having been completely underwhelmed by the other superseded "best evers," e.g. Tenors and Halcros, I am a bit leery of the hype. But, then again, John Marks, who is, to me, t...
For philes who have spendor or know spendor
I've heard numerous Spendor speakers placed fairly close to the back wall. Their newer, floorstanding speakers, like the S5e and the S8e sound pretty good, if you are not a bass freak or play speakers at very high volume.Personally, I like their o...
How does sound change when tubes start to fail?
Mezmo,Very good advice. However, I am always trying different tubes so its hard to say whether the difference is attributable to wear or to the inherent difference between the tubes.
How does sound change when tubes start to fail?
If your system sounds a bit tired and lackluster, it's either you or the tubes have started to go bad. Sometimes older tubes develop noise problems as well (sputtering and whistles, etc.).
Personal amp evolution
1. Pioneer Integrated (@1975)2. Hafler (kit)3. Adcom 5554. Classe 1755. Custom made 2a3 (pp tube,Chicago transformer) (obviously I bought high-efficiency speakers)6. Custom made 45 (pp,Acrosound TO-330 transformer)(still own this amp)7. Audionote ...
THE Show - worth going?
T.H.E. Show is located right next to the Alexis Park where the audio side of CES holds its show. Admission is free and there is no hassle or waiting to get in. There is easily more than a whole day's worth of things to see at T.H.E. Show. Because ...
Component that stopped the upgrade cycle cold?
No. There is always something that I wish my system could do more of, or less of, and if any component can provide it, it would be a coveted item. Not knowing which component would do that to my system, makes it impossible to say any particular co...
Anybody blow a ceramic woofer with an OTL amp?
I am a bit leery of OTL's. I know that if a tube does fail, they will not actually pass D.C. because they are coupled by a capacitor, but still, I worry. A friend borrowed a Joule Electra OTL and it was subject to intermittent popping. On his horn...
