How to properly set up a turntable
The only difficulty with the SmartTracker (I own one) is the requirement to find the precise location of the bearing; on some arms it is not that easy to do.  After you do that, and after locking the platter so it doesn't move (painter's tape or a...
Tube Tester
I don't think you really need a tester.  I own an Amplitrex, but, it is on loan to a friend who owns many more amps than I do, does repair work on the side for fun and can put that beast to better use.  Others, above, have given great advice about...
Who's done it besides me ?
Yes, scales made with ferrous material that can be attracted to the magnets in a cartridge can be a problem.  The only time I came close to damaging a cartridge is when the balance type of scale I was using had a ferrous beam.  What is really craz...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
Thanks, that is what I thought.  The motor then has the same issue with noise/friction, albeit attenuated by the isolation provided by the belt.  The New Way bushing looks like it provides effective isolation of the shaft from the bore in the bush...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
terry9,Did you install that air bearing on the main platter bearing?  Is the motor that drives your set up similarly equipped with an air bearing?
Blue Hawaii tube amp
For my particular taste, the 009 is a bit too bright and analytical sounding; the 007 is better in that regard.  But, the 009 goes substantially deeper in bass, is more efficient and can play louder than the 007, so there are trade-offs involved; ...
Most valuable LP
I don't know the value of anything in my collection.  I suppose the Mobile Fidelity complete box sets of Beatles and Rolling Stones are worth something (given to me as a gift from a friend who also gave away to someone else a Butcher cover Beatles...
Who's done it besides me ?
I've never damaged a cartridge that way.  Nothing gets close to the stylus, except for stylus cleaning tools.  I would never use a perimeter clamp/weight because of the inconvenience and risk of accidentally hitting the stylus.  I don't have to wo...
Blue Hawaii tube amp
When I got my Blue Hawaii, a good friend came over with several sets of vintage El 34's and 6CA7's.  I think one nice sounding pair was an xf3 tube, but, its been a while so I may be wrong.  I ended up liking a quad of Telefunken EL 34's, so that ...
You could work for any manufacturer, past or present...
This question reminds me of a John Oliver comment that there is only one answer to the query about who, dead or alive, you would want to have dinner with:  It's Tucker Carlson, DEAD.
What your choice speakers with spikes or speakers with a vibration isolation device?
Vibration coupling, isolation or absorption (turn motion into heat) are different approaches to tuning, which means that, to the extent they change the sound, such changes can be positive or negative.  That means you have to experiment to see whic...
What is your most beautiful component?
In my current lineup of components in the system, I would say that the nicest looking thing is my Naim ND 555 server or my Basis Debut turntable.  I have two Isotek power conditioners that are made of aluminum that have a decent appearance too.But...
What is your most beautiful component?
rodge827,I love the sound of Charney Companion speakers.  I also think they look pretty good and are reasonably compact and light (not often the case with very high efficiency speakers).  Although they are not inexpensive, they are nonetheless a r...
Dedicated 20 amp circuit - Electrician laughed!
I know several people who not only put in dedicated lines, but also, put in a dedicated main panel for the audio system.  A local dealer did the same for his demonstration rooms.  Still, when a noise meter was plugged into the line, it showed that...
have you ever bought stereo without listening first
Most of the electronics I've bought were either borrowed from the dealer for home audition, or purchased with a right to return the item if I did not like what I heard.  Speakers were only auditioned in the store even when a home audition was offe...
