can you play a gold record?
You're kidding, right?!
Cleaning horns on Avantgarde speakers?
A belt sander, with #30 grit should do the trick nicely!;-)Good luck with your project!
Are Bang and Olufsen turntables any good?
Whether or not B&O turntables are anywhere near state of the art, (and I think not, to be honest), remains to be seen. They were, IMHO, the best of the mid-fi turntables, as they had lots of features, but only decent sonics. However, their cart...
grilles on or off the speakers??
To answer your two part question:1) On, (at least in my case)2) Science (at least in the case of my speakers).1) I keep the grills on my speakers, mostly for aesthetic reasons, as I think the speakers look much better with them on. (However, if I ...
What Printed Magazine do you prefer?
Stereophile is the one I dropped! It reads more like they are being paid by the very equipment manufacturers who they are supposed to be reviewing. (Amazing how most of the equipment that they review is from manufacturers who also advertise in thei...
Buy new tubes, or use "stock tubes?"
I completely disagree with Elizabeth! You should immediately go out and buy as many expensive NOS tubes as you can find. (And, at least one of each type, and better yet, two, as you'll instantly have a backup set for the ones that you like the best...
Looking for input on record clamps.
You might want to ask the manufacturer what other clamps they recommend.(Some tables are not setup for using a really heavy clamp.)FYI, I use a Basis turntable myself, and really like the Basis clamp.

Dynavector XV-1S impressions?
Hello Ecka,Definitely lower the loading down to 100 Ohms or so.As far as the gain goes, somewhere in the 60 db range is probably about right, depending of course on what your preamp's gain is set for. Once you get your cartridge broken in, which c...
Dynavector XV-1S impressions?
I too disagree with your impressions. I assume your cartridge is either not broken in yet, or you have not adjusted the gain and/or loading to get the most out of this cartridge. Can you tell us what your phono stage is, along with the gain and loa...
SS Preamp with Tube Amp?
I basically agree with what Nsgarch said.I run my hybrid Lamm M2.1 amplifiers with my solid state Ayre K-1xe preamp and I love the sound. It is very quiet, and yet exhibits a nice touch of that tube sound.By the way, this has been discussed many, ...
Valhalla non factory termination- lower value?
How well were they terminated? Was it done poorly? So, if they were re-terminated professionally and competently, then I can't see why it would degrade the sound. And if it doesn't degrade the sound, why would it affect the cost to any great degree?...
Has anyone listened to the new Dave Matthews CD?
Zenblaster and Bob,When I first got back into vinyl about 6 years ago, I was, coincidentally, also very much into Dave Matthews at the same time. So, I looked around for any vinyl that he had out and found that there was only one OOP LP available ...
Has anyone listened to the new Dave Matthews CD?
I like the music, (I agree his best in a few years), but the vinyl seems very compressed.Rather disappointing actually, give that his music seems like a natural for vinyl, given the acoustic type of instruments that some of the band members play. ...
Cleaning smaller records
Interesting, I had not thought about the VPI having a problem with that, but now that you mention it, I can see it being problematic. This is not a problem with the Nitty Gritty type of cleaners, as one can just put a finger over the slot that sti...
