Need highly transparent detailed amp---how does Pass XA25 compare to Gamut D100/D200 MKIII
What about Benchmark AHB2.  Practically nothing measures close to it and the only complain is that it is too revealing (transparent, analytical etc). I have one and it is wonderful.
Hearing loss and HiFi
Would I be better off selling my current system and buying a BEST BUY receiver and some speakers and calling it quits.Would it improve what you hear or make it worse?
What have you been working on in 2020?
Building small electronics lab.  So far I have:Soldering StationMicroscopeOscilloscopeArbitrary Function GeneratorBench and portable multimetersLogic AnalyzerPower supplyAntistatic work matI started to play a little bit with the smallest of Arduin...
Thoughts on DAT tape? Any users?
Digital tape has one advantage over recording to computer - according to RIAA it is legal to copy any music to digital tape (including friends CDs) because royalties were paid by tape manufacturer.  Audio CD-Rs and MiniDisks are also legal, but co...
Benchmark DAC1 Volume Control replacement.
The one I installed has conductive plastic track.
Benchmark DAC1 Volume Control replacement.
George, thank you for the link.  Looks very promising.  It would have to be on the outside, since room inside is limited to standard 9mm pot while PCB is so close to the hole, that nothing else would fit inside.  One option is to put it on the out...
Wired vs. Wireless
hickamore, It's the wire, conducting electrical noise from computer or router/network to the DAC.  Even optical isolation in Ethernet network has few picofarads across - enough to inject some high frequency noise.  I would limit number of necessar...
Wired vs. Wireless
WiFi might produce electrical ambient noise, that you most likely already have if you use wireless router, but wired connection can inject electrical noise directly into the system.  Also WiFi transmits only data and as such it cannot have lower o...
RCA cable design
Tough crowd. Signal doesn’t flow. Current flowsCurrent doesn't flow. Current is.  Electric charge flows.(crowd can be even tougher)  :)
Connecting laptop to dac via usb- gear on or off?
USB standard allows for hot-swapping.  There are 4 wires in the USB cable/connector - 2 for power (+5V, GND) and 2 for differential signal (D+, D-).  If your DAC is self powered than it will be better to use 2 wire USB cable with signal wires only...
Why do most phono preamps lack XLR input even thought cartridges are naturally balanced?
Perhaps it works, but I would think that it can do more harm than good in comparison to plain grounded shield.  High frequency noise currents induced in the signal wire flows on the surface (skin effect) - shield to ground.  I'm not sure replacing...
Why do most phono preamps lack XLR input even thought cartridges are naturally balanced?
roberttdid, Sorry I read it wrong and I understand argument about shorted turn, but transformer works both directions. Any closed loop will pick-up ambient electrical noise.  Induced electric charge will flow in this loop thru/along the shield pro...
Why do most phono preamps lack XLR input even thought cartridges are naturally balanced?
roberttdid, Of course.  I posted only to state that shield, IMHO, plays important role in defense against electrical noise (when connected properly).  I also strongly agree with you that shorting open ends of the shield with wire creates large loo...
100W, 200W, or 300W?
Power specification is very vague.  Average music power delivered to speakers (dissipated heat) is very low, unless one listens to sinewaves (then it is 50%).  When music sounds about half as loud as the music peak it is 10% of the peak power, not...
Why do most phono preamps lack XLR input even thought cartridges are naturally balanced?
Twisting a pair of wires works great against capacitive or electromagnetic pickup, exposing both wires evenly to electric or magnetic field.  That way induced noise currents are exactly even and cancel.  It works fine as long as twist is even and ...
