Hard Drive based system
Ecruz,Congratulations! It is a waste not to TRL a Sony player.Any comments on video and audio quality for DVD playback?
DVD Player Setup.
Hi TIC,I have only PCM digital connection out of my DVD player. My experience is that the player may choose Dolby 2.0 on its own. Forcing the audio format to Dolby 5.1 (the playere would show "Dolby 2.1") sounds better to me.If the DVD player auto...

TIC,If you set the digital output to PCM format, it is always stereo PCM from the digital output, regardless of the original format. Analog output may be different.jz,I agree with you mostly. For some reason, Dolby 5.1 sounds better than Dolby 2.0...
SPL METER? ATI OR RADIO SHACK
Behringer DEQ2496 + measuring mike (can't recall the model) will help a great deal in speaker placement and room acoustics. More money, of couse, but it is a lot more fun too.
iTunes & EAC
One way to augment WAV files is to use a very long file name like "Artist, Album, Song title". Someone pointed out that SlimServer/Squeezebox can parse this information correctly, so you can search by artist, album or song as if the files are tagged.

Cwlondon,Edesilva is talking about lossless compression, fundamentally differently from MP3 which is a lossy compression. There should be no sonic difference between lossless compression and uncompressed, by definition.

The best source is SlimDevices.com.Basically, you run a software called SlimServer on a computer or some NAS device. You can tell it where your music files are. Then, over a wired or wireless network, you can play these music files on the Squeezeb...

It may seem cheap, but there are a lot of positve reports on using Behringer DCX2496.
DAC choice advice - hard-drive based system
Going by popular opinion, Benchmark DAC-1 is a "can't go wrong" choice at a given price point. Except that if you crave for warm sound, then don't bother. It would be best to audition at least a short list of DACs, but if you have to gamble, the od...
Another sign SACD is dying
With Blu-Ray gaining the edge on HD-DVD, Sony may eventually get its way to slip DSD/SACD in there.
DAC choice advice - hard-drive based system
>7) stepped attenuatorIs this on the front volume pot or the back screws? How much difference would this make?A few years back, Benchmark offered a $50 update for older DAC-1's (non-upsampling ones?). I wonder if there is any update offer for n...
Extremely budget minded system for under $500.00 ?
Start with Swans M200 powered speakers (http://www.enjoythemusic.com/magazine/equipment/1101/swanm200.htm).Spend the rest on the source. Traditionally, a competent CD/Universal player. Alternatively, an iPod or a "digital media receiver" (e.g. Rok...
How to connect Computer to stereo system.
Daimbert,Do you mean an M-Audio Audiophile USB? It is not a bad starting point. You can connect the analog output to your amp now and look into connecting the digital output to a DAC in the future.Have fun.

When it comes to the digital output, Squeezebox is an audiophile device. It claims an output jitter of less than 50ps.
