How does music "move" down a wire?
Please, a follow-up question about signals "moving" through wire. I read that a signal takes the easiest path. If you pair two wires for, say, the positive run - one wire with fine strands, the other with large strands - will that create some diff...
Phono Pre Kit Builders:Thoughts & Recommendations
I built a Tetra (phono)/Aikido (line) stage preamp with help from Roy Mottram of http://www.tubes4hifi.com/. Roy also was VERY helpful during the build process. Roy had compared several preamps (incl. his own design) and put the Aikido on top. I c...
How does music "move" down a wire?
Thanks Elizabeth, that was a great explanation. From your explanation I would guess that connections (e.g., spades) also would affect the wave especially if the connector was a huge hunk of different material? I assume material "density" (or resis...
Your homemade tweaks?
I thought the Boston Audio Design TuneBlocks might be a good tweak but couldn't afford them so ordered some high density graphite rod - cut to my specs - from an industrial supplier in the USA. I ordered some ceramic balls (I liked the colour) fro...
Buidling a Classical Library - MUST HAVES!
Two great sources of information are:Gramophone on-line archives (reviews back to 1923) at http://www.gramophone.co.uk/and available from used book dealers the "Penguin Stereo Record Guide" for those looking for vinyl recordings rather than CDs.
Strange phenomona this hobby.
Stringreen, your post brought to mind an experience I had at a concert in Calgary. I have found that the sound received at the Dress Circle level of seats is glorious - I usually try to sit near the middle - but recently my seat was on the extreme...
Bass Clarinet Recordings
I have recently been turned on to Buddy DeFranco who has been called "one of the 'senior statesmen' of jazz ...generally regarded as the greatest jazz clarinetist of all time." I have one of his LPs with Oscar Peterson on piano. I apologize if he ...
Dreaded wall unit
I agree with Hifitime that the front of your speakers should be at least equal to the edge of your cabinet. If not you will get reflections off the edges that will distort the sound.
Thanks to Audiogon and friends
Orpheus10, actually that's a very good idea although perhaps not building them from scratch. There are a number of excellent kits available - e.g., from Madisound - that are easy to build and have the crossovers already designed and built. I put t...
Thanks to Audiogon and friends
Hello, being a relatively new semi-audiophile perhaps I can pass on a few tips that generally don't come up until after you've already purchased components. The room you listen in has a large impact on what you hear so before purchasing loudspeaker...
Creek vs. Parasound
Sorry, just thought about another point. I don't know if it matters to you or not but the Parasound 2250 does not allow b-wiring of speakers. There are two speaker outputs but they are to connect another set of speakers and not for bi-wiring.
Creek vs. Parasound
I'm using the Parasound 2100/2250 in a 21' x 12' room mainly for two-channel but also connected to my AV system with sub-woofer. I'm also using the phono stage of the 2100. The by-pass feature is a great option to separate home theater listening f...
Recommend me a new PHONO stage.
I haven't heard it but today I asked the same question at my local dealer (whom I trust) and they suggested a Moon phono pre-amp which was in that price ballpark.
Prefered Freight Company
I recently received four large boxes - a speaker kit - from Madisound in Wisconsin sent to Alberta, Canada by FedEx. The rate that Madisound obtained was tremendous and FedEx service was wonderful, with tracking information immediate and finely de...
What is the "best" cartridge a Technics 1210...
I had used the Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge on my MkII and liked it very much but, itching to try something else, I bought a Zupreme headshell and added the Dynavector 10X5 which was even better. The Dynavector is a high output MC so is suitable using...
