Classe or Krell
Pops comment about model changes is actually a good thing. You can buy last year's models for 60% of new. The CAST technology has replaced a line (all the FPB without the C) line. I prefer the Krell over the Classe. Classe always sounds too soft t...
Built your own speakers ?
My opinion is still if I was given the drivers and crossovers of a speaker I like, I'd still be hard pressed to duplicate the sound because of the cabinets. Its not just a woodworking exercise. The sound deadening, diffraction limiting, time align...
CD Copies...why do they sound worse?
In my humble opinion the CDR's sound worst because of jitter. The big companies have higher standards then any of the burners. There was a big article in Audiophile about 3 years ago about why the BMG CDs sounded worse then the original company pr...
My Only Question Is.........
Theoretically a good preamp can improve the sound over your straight wire scenario in only one situation I can think of. If the Wadia's output impedence is much higher then the input impedence of the amp you might suck the current out of the Wadia...
Built your own speakers ?
I used to build speakers when in college (30+ years ago)That's when you could buy 1 inch plywood and speakers better then those installed in most factory systems. Crossovers were nothing more then LC circuits. Well now the good audiophile speakers...
Digital Cable: To balance or not to ?
I have a SFT-1 and SFD-2 Mk II running balanced out to a Line 3 and Krell KSA200S (balalnced all the way) I have coaxial, AT&T glass, and now the balanced (using Alpha Core Perl silver balanced interconnects including as the digital cable. The...
Stereo image moves right to left .
The earlier replys are right on. Did this problem just start or did you just recently notice it? If it's a new problem it probably not a manufacturer's defect but rather a dirty potentiometer. If that's so you can try two things. First turn the st...
SACD vs. DVD vs. HDCD
Lancel2000 I think your off a bit. MP3 is not a lossless compression system whereas Zip is. I don't disagree that its good enough for parties or playing over the vacumm cleaner, but clearly not for and serious listening.
Balanced lines solve hum problems?
Balanced cables will solve the problem if its radio frequecy interference. You should disconnect your preamp and amp and then listen for hum. If its still there its probably an amp problem. You mentioned a refrigerator motor. That's easy. The moto...
Fuzzy Lyrics
Don't think its vibration. That effect is very small. If he is really aware of the fuzziness then its probably mic'd improperly. Try playing the CD on another system. A car CD player would be just fine since they tend to emphasize the vocal band. ...
All cables are Neuteral?
Maybe you should get a moderately prices neutral cable and then experiment with a capacitive shunt across the terminals. That would certainly round off the highs if that's what you really want to do. I can give you the impedence equation for a giv...
Sonic Frontiers Line 3 vs. BAT VK-5i
I've heard that boring comment from several reviewers and can relate to it. I find the Line 3 does tame the aggressive tendencies of the Thiels and possibly the Krell amp. However the music doesn't sound boring to me. It doesn't leap out and grab ...
Speaker cables for CJ/Thiel
Using Divinity (Alpha Core) with my Thiel 3.6s. These wires or more appropriately ribbons improved the speakers significantly and cut the high end stridency often mentioned for the Thiel line.
TOS or Coax?
Big difference. Toslink is a very bandwidth limited interconnect. All other methods such as AT&T glass, Coax, and balanced are better. The problem is in the digital to light to digital convertion process. The converters in theater and low end ...
How do you know what's Class A?
Its actually the October and May Stereophile issues, its a monthly, not a seasonal mag.
