Cayin A 88-T integrated:The new King of the Hill?
SonicBeauty, What is your price range? If you can spend a lot more than the amps so far discussed cost, you may want to give the new Gamut Di-150 a try. It's a nice sounding SS integrated with some of the depth, smoothness, and coherence one often...
Comparing MA-6900 to the DK Design VS-1 MkII. . .
Even though this thread has gone "cold," let me say that I had a DK VS-1 Mk II in house for about 3 weeks and then a Mac 6900 for about 5 days but not at the same time.Based on sound alone, I was way more interested in the Mac than the DK...and by...
Coincident with 8 ohm vs16 ohm
The Coincident Super Eclipses III will dip into the 6-Ohm region between 3k Hz up to about 5k Hz. Whether this dip in that frequency range is significant to most tube amplifiers, I do not know. The Supers may not be as efficient many of us think. ...
DK Design Review
I have sampled a few of the posts on this recent DK thread and one paragraph from Jmcgrogan2 stands out (from my perspective): "84audio and Johnrob, congrats on your informative posts. They are an act of class from DK users. Perhaps if Audiogon is...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
Bojack, Do you have a high quality EQ recommendation? I toyed around with the tone controls of the MacIntosh 6500 integrated amp (on loan for audition) and found that they just mucked up the sound further. A good EQ will largely avoid this effect,...
Coincident with 8 ohm vs16 ohm
With a tube power amp, supposedly the only difference between the 4-Ohm tap vs. the 8-Ohm tap is that the 4-Ohm tap has more active secondary windings in the output transformer. Someone with more technical knowledge could maybe clarify this. I do...
Coincident with 8 ohm vs16 ohm
I have the Super Eclipse III's and can switch my amps between 4 and 8 ohms. The speakers sound better when driven by the amps in their 4-Ohm setting.Even though the Coincident spec's say the speakers are nominally 14-Ohm speakers--which is probabl...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
I am still searching for that workable integrated amp. So far nothing has given me *enough* satisfaction (do not expect equal performance) for me to replace my pre/pwr combo.I did replace an Arcici S-1 Suspense Rack with a much shorter wooden rack...
Ayre C 5xe Universal vs. Cary 306 SACD
Well, it looks like this thread finally picked up some traction. Nice to see.On a side note...does anybody know if you can program individual tracks into the Ayre C 5xe for just those tracks to be played back? I need this capability for recording ...
Ayre C 5xe Universal vs. Cary 306 SACD
Congratulations, Theo, on your C-5xe. How does it look in black? Thanks for the great "sonic" description, too.I may opt for Mattkimb96's suggestion of just upgrading my CX-7 and be done with it.I have been side-tracked with some recent auditionin...
Ayre C 5xe Universal vs. Cary 306 SACD
Thank you, Mattkimb96 and Theo, for your input. When you get your C-5xe (Theo), please update us on your impressions. And if you get one too, Mattkimb96, it would be great to hear from you. (BTW, it's great to hear that Ayre offers a black facepla...
Audience Au24 vs. Shunyata Aries IC
The two IC are quite different sounding; figuring out which will work in your system is a "try them first" thing, IMHO. I have a system's worth of the Au24--including speaker wire right now. I am also very familiar with the Shunyata Aries IC's and...
Ayre C 5xe Universal vs. Cary 306 SACD
Thanks, Theo. For whatever it's worth, I just did a comparison of the 306 SACD on Red Book CD with my own CD-only Ayre CX-7 (not what I started the thread for). On just CD's, the Ayre sounded just as good as the Cary 306 SACD did. There were diffe...
Best preamp is no preamp: always true?
Add to the list of integrated amps with a passive input the Ayre AX-7e. I have not heard any of these (passive input) integrateds. I would like to, though. Their power amp sections were designed specifically to be run with a passive pre' section (...
Best preamp is no preamp: always true?
Marakanetz, you make a good point. I guess it would be possible to have a high out put CD player with decent volume control of some kind and maybe a power amp with a good input section to combine to take the place of a pre-amp.Someone else on this...
