What's the best Sony CD/SACD player?
How do you tell what kind of SACD decoding chip is used on which model? Unlike other high end manufacturers Sony employs their own custom chipset and AFAIK it's not published anywhere which chips are used.
Entry level tube amps?
The plasma is mounted ok. It was crooked camera angle. It has been updated with better and more recent picture showing current equipments. :)
What's the best Sony CD/SACD player?
I haven't heard DVP, but my XA5400ES does not sound strident. However there is this Sony house sound that I also heard on DAP9000ES preamp as I remember. I wonder if that's what you are referring to. Other than the house sound, it sounds exception...
connectng CD player directly to amp, good or bad?
You can look at it this way. If the CDP with variable output sounded more or less the same with or without a preamp X, you wouldn't need that preamp unless you have extra sources. Preamp makes a difference in sound, and it's highly subjective to s...
Hard Drive versis Flash Drive
Being mechanical design doesn't mean it's more prone to the failure. Over 20 years of owning various computers, I have had one hard disk failure but more than half dozen memory failures. Solid state drives do not have moving part, but don't make a...
Midrange texture?
Sean, thanks for the input. ;) None of my component has earned immunity, and I'm open to any suggestions.
Midrange texture?
Onhwy61, I agree with both assertions. The components have to work together as a system, and the stars has to align correctly, then it will start sounding magic. The type of detail I'm after could ver well be the effect of close mic'ing. However h...
What am I listening to, it can't be Digital?
I have two dozen or so DVD Audio disks, and the quality has been either hit or miss. The best sound I've heard is DAD version of Somethin' Else by Cannonball Adderley. It's not MLP encoded DVD Audio, but straight 24 bit PCM recording. Maybe that's...
Entry level tube amps?
I have CJ 16LS v2 for pre. I've always used SS power amps. I've used Theta, Proceed, Mark Levinson, and currently First Watt amp. All the gears in my system are listed in the link that says "System" next to my user id. I like the sound of my syste...
Hard Drive versis Flash Drive
Like Almarg said, the audio data is sent from the storage to the computer via high speed bi directional error corrected bus, and it shouldn't really matter whether the source is magnetic drive or solid state. On the other hand, SPDIF, HDMI, or USB...
What am I listening to, it can't be Digital?
The effect you are hearing is the 24 bit high resolution content of DVD Audio. You are still hearing the stereo mix unless your headphone has separate five ear buds.
set up question cambridge
The issue you are seeing has to do with the gain, not the power. Every amp has different amount of gain. The position of the volume knob has profound effect on the psycho acoustics. Many people "think" the amp sound inferior when they see the volu...
Entry level tube amps?
Thanks all for the suggestions. Please keep in mind that my goal is to get more texture in the midrange compared to my current amp, First Watt F5, which is rather good one in terms of midrange performance. I don't need a lot of power, as my curren...
Cambridge 840c burn in
What's breaking in? Everything. Caps, wires, tranformers, drive motor, laser, chips, etc....Then I went all pc HDD and sold it.Speaking of which, will computer gear need breaking in as well? HDD motor? power supply? keyboard and mouse?
next step for my setup? advice appreciated
Yes, I think a tube preamp will go a long way. Your Oppo will also go a long way. You can integrate stereo preamp to your processor. You'll need HT bypass output from the preamp. Integrating with subwoofer can be done as well. If the sub has dual ...
