InfiniCaps in Audio Research gear
Maxgain, the Classic 150s have fet inputs and 6550C outputs. The solid state inputs help provide for considerably enhanced base compared to most other tube amplifiers. I haven't looked into updating the imput fets.
InfiniCaps in Audio Research gear
I have been told by a respected Audio Research repair expert that infinicaps were used as opposed to oil based caps. or other choices partly because of size consideratiions. That being said, I have had Classic 150 monos upgraded to infinicaps by A...
Will your cables live FOREVER?
I just sent back a pair of Cardas Helink Golden bi-wired speaker cables for new spades because they had oxidized. They looked and sounded great after their return. The big decision was did it pay to have them repaired or did it make sense to audit...
Mixing SS and Tubes
I use an ARC Ref 2 and a BAT VK-P10 for my tube preamplification and switch between SS and tube power amps. The ARC Classic 150s and Mark Levinson 333 have different personalities. The SS works best with rock. The Eagles "Hotel California" as reco...
What to do when buyer claims sellers item broken?
I recently shipped a preamp that was checked out by a professional just before shipping. The customer claimed problems of which of course there was no way to verify. Since this was a phono preamp, the customer could have caused issues when setting...
Bat VK-P10 and Sonic Frontiers SFP 1 Signature
The unit was shipped back to BAT and found to have a defective regulator. i was told that this would definetly cause the preamp to be noisy. It's on its way back and I'll report on the results. By the way, they fixed the unit at no charge to me.
How did you get started?
My first system included a Sansui tube receiver a Dual turnatable with a Shure catridge and Japanese no-name speakers. They were purchased in 1966 while I was still in the Navy. I have had MANY different systems since then, but my love of music mo...
Bat VK-P10 and Sonic Frontiers SFP 1 Signature
jfrech, I beg to differ with you, but I brought the VK-P10 into True Sound Audio and Nick spoke with Victor and someone else at BAT and both indicated that the input circuitry eas modified on later VK-P10s to make the inputs truely balanced,
Bat VK-P10 and Sonic Frontiers SFP 1 Signature
The problem existed with both a Clearaudio and a Koetsu. In actuality it also exhibited a ground hum with the Clearaudio that only was there in the balanced mode. I switched back to an RCA phono cable and solved that problem. BAT acknowledged the ...
cd player with volume control - under 500
Some of the older Sony models such as the 557 I believe. They're also built like tanks and have wonderful transports
Dunlavy SC-IVa how best driven
I am pleased that my Classic 150s will work well. I have loved these amps and the way their solid state front ends and 4 pair each of 6550C back ends provide the best of both worlds. I do have two more questions if you are kind enough to help out....
How to upgrade B&W Matrix Series 2
I have two pair of 801c series 2 and one has the North Creek crossovers. They are being driven by Classic 150 amps that have had cap upgrades done at Audio Research. The crossovers greatly improve the overl performance of the speakers. The bass is...
What's Best , Audio Research VT-100 or VT-100 MKII
I have a Classic 150 that has been upgraded with Infinicaps by ARC. To me this amp sounds more musical than any of the VT-100 models.
More Questions about Tube Noise
There really are several types of noise and they can be amplifiable or constant. A low level non-amplfiable hiss goes with the territory. It is unlikely that this is an issue at the listening position. If this is the case, relax, sit back and enjo...
Pre-amp tube upgrades?
Gundam91- The Koetsu is a great match for the SME arm. The Analog Room in San Jose did a great job with that suggestion. It is a low output MC cartridge and requires considerable gain. I employ the step up transformer funtion in the VKP10 at maixi...
