Dorm Room Amp/Preamp NAD, good enough for the dorm. Good enough for a second system anywhere. Use the money you don't spend on hardware on music and/or live performances.
Power Amp..opinions please Class "D"; so much has been said. I have tried a Tripath based class d and now have a Hypex UcD based power amp. I like them both but for me, the hypex is preferred. Channel Island, Bel Canto, Rowland, many good names.
Upgrading wall outlets Br3098, your points are well made. I have been in HiFi long enough to remember the introduction of 8track. I think it is easier to put in a new outlet than cleaning and adjusting an old one. The present interest in wires (of all kinds) is the resu...
Thinking of buying a solid state amp Tube pre with class "d". I have a custom built 12au7 based pre and a Hypex class "d". Been running the combo for about 18 months. I think it sounds extraordinarily great. Tight highs, tight deep bass, extreme detail but, believe it or not, it stil...
Upgrading wall outlets Going to hardware store and getting new outlets (spend a few bucks on the better grade) should provide a tighter connection and possibly better performance to almost any system. But getting anything more exotic or expensive than hospital grade? Pl...
SET with inefficient speakers In theory, if the speakers will give you 88db for one watt and you listen around 80 db, it will work. In theory. Try before you buy.
Jay Gordon Holt As an aging audiophile who remembers 45's and the introduction of cassette, I have to say I learned a lot from J. Gordon Holt. When Stereophile was still a small, little known publication for a small, little audio population; I became interested i...
Transitioning from Tubes back to SS Once again. Try SS power amp with tube pre. I have lived with the combo for decades. SS power amps can be had for not much, but tube pre's with remote aren't cheap. My tube pre does not have remote. I don't know if there is a tube pre, SS power in...
NOS 12AU7s with Ayon amps RFT is not an expensive tube, but I like them. Priced so that you can give them a try and judge for yourself. Also lived with Electroharmonix, Telefunk, Sylvania, JAN, etc. Not interested in the ultra $$, but I agree with Rodman99999 that you don'...
can a tube-o-phile be happy with ss? Sigh. One more time. A tube pre with a ss power amp is the combo that J. Gordon Holt recommemded years ago. Of course, each must be worth listening to. I've had a tube pre with ss power amp for over a decade and will not go either all tube or all ...
New to tube rolling, where to purchase tubes? Tubemonger has served me well. I've used them multiple times and have no complaints.
SS Power Amp upgrade Bryston, from everything I have read or heard. A Krell dealer told me Bryston is the poor man's Krell. HE admired Bryston. Also, they seem to be easy to re-sell. Just my two cents.
Power conditioning here we go again. the power coming from a wall outlet should be 110-120 60hz. It is not always that. Everyone should have a power conditioner that gets rid of the "grunge" that comes down a power line, eliminates rfi, and keeps the output to withi...
need help on transparent sounding 12au7 tubes RFT from tubemonger.com. I have had very good luck with the RFT "fats". They are a nice inexpensive alternative. I use a hypex based power amp and the combo of tube with "class d" gives me a sound that is both warm and highly detailed.
Any excellent results with class D amp and BAT pre Pugstub, you have reopenned an old and tedious wound with your claim that class d's have unnatural highs. I have used Tripath and UcD based amps with a custom DynaPas pre and the highs are just fine. Although I must say that, in my opinion, any s.... |
