Yet another wacko 'Help Me Decide' thread...
Thanks Doug. Your reasoning reflects my own to a large degree. Every year I tell myself the RCM needs to become a priority and every year I put it off in favor of the reproduction chain. (And yes, the records stil get cleaned.) It has taken me a w...

Thanks for the sifting and winnowing ... I kinda went through some of that to arrive at my current state.Currently I use a 12 yr old RCM from Audio Advisor - the entry level model made by Nitty Gritty and sold by AA - which Nitty Gritty admits was...
Yet another wacko 'Help Me Decide' thread...
I'm still really torn. The playback source is the *record*. Cartridges come and go - but one's vinyl collection is the fundament, the ding an sich that warrants great care and preservation. A clean record is a happy record. The absence of noise, g...

Heh heh - I hear you - it is hard to keep track of all the bits. The Airy is a moving coil cartridge and the Loricraft is a very good record cleaner. Both bring their own value to analog - I'm having a hard time deciding.
Which Tube Preamp under $10K?
I'm currently considering The CJ CT5, one of the VACs, the VTL 6.5 and perhaps the BAT 31SE or not yet released ARC LS26.Then there's the Steelhead which gets you a pre- plus a sweet phonostage. And if you really want to buy the latest forget this...
Conrad Johnson Primier 16ls1 vs 16ls2 owners...
I sold my 16LS mkI a couple months ago after several years of thoroughly enjoyable ownership. Your 7308s should work quite well. I enjoyed tube rolling the 16LS and had no sense that it was hard on tubes. I used mostly Amperex 7308 and 6DJ8s, the ...
new CJ sound compared to old CJ sound
Thank you Brent for the kind words. While I never thought of CJ preamps as sounding 'blah' or 'sleepy', I agree with Bombaywalla that the 16LS represents a less caramel-colored, less yin-like approach. This is not to say that current models do not ...
new CJ sound compared to old CJ sound
From my perspective the short answer to your questions is: Yes.On the CJ web site is a link to a Martin Colloms review of the ACT2 which includes comparisons to the ART and the 16LS. My own review of the ACT2 at soundstage.com does a direct compar...
Best phono-pre for mc-systems below $ 1.500,00 ?
$1500 is a tough price point for phono stages, imo.In tubes, I'd take a look at the Wright WPP200C + Wright transformer at around $1100 new - hard to find used. For solid state, the Camelot Lancelot Pro is a nice battery powered unit, w/ flexible ...
Anyone listen to the new Conrad Johnson CT5 preamp
The way I look at it, the CT5 is to the ACT2 as the Premier 16LS is to the ART, and the 16 remains one fine preamp CT5- based on the composite triode ART/ACT2 topology- 1 6N30 (6H30) per channel- a bit less extensive use of the Teflon CJD capacito...
Tubes for a Conrad Johnson 17LS?
Hi Dave - The different types have different electrical characteristics - which is why they are different types. (For example a 6922 draws less heater voltage than a 6DJ8.) The circuit design of the 17LS creates a single 'composite' triode from th...
Tubes for a Conrad Johnson 17LS?
Get to know the preamp in your system with the stock tubes then venture into NOS. Can get a bit pricey, but its hard to go back to the stock Sovteks.Amperex 6DJ8s offer a touch of the romantic, with superb mids and airy highs - these were the ones...
Amplifier Hum
some causes are:Loose or incorrect transformer mounting. DC voltage on the line. Does the hum vary at different times of the day? Do you hear it through the speakers? Here's info from people who want to sell you a power conditioner to fix hum: Find...
importance of phono cartridge
To offer another perspective - introducing a reference quality or near reference quality component tends, in my experience, to yield one of two types of effects. Either it will expose up or downstream weaknesses in other gear, or it will let you h...
Help with a preamp upgrade
Personally I find C-J preamps really great for classical music. If you wanna upgrade (versus sidegrade), and you like the C-J sound, consider that C-J has a new preamp coming out based on ACT2 technology and you may see some good deals on PV-14s a...
