What should I choose??
In my experience - and I've owned more than a dozen systems over the years - there is a much more discernible difference in the sound of speakers than in the sound of electronics.  Therefore, you should buy the new speakers first.  By the way, I h...

Usless but interesting ....how many of you old timers started with original Large Advents?
My first speakers were Acoustic Research 3A’s. Then I went to Large Advents, then B&W 802s ($1700 at the time).  My last three pairs of speakers have been successively larger Maggie’s. I love the 3.7i’s the most.
Friend needs advice for $8,000 system
I agree with your friend on the Maggies.  I have three pairs and they are great high performance bargains.  But as others above have stated, they require a lot of power to sound their best. He should be looking for an integrated amp of at least 10...
Help me understand John Coltrane .... seriously.
I studied tenor sax from Grades 4 through 12 and my music teacher was a retired jazz musician.  Coltrane is what is known as a "progressive" jazz players.  Progressives use a lot of atonality, which can sound like they're playing the wrong notes, ...
Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
I bought the 3 CD, 1 Blu-Ray set.  The outtakes, which comprise two CDs. are amazing.  They show the songs in early stages of development - 28 tracks. A must for any Beatles fan.  I have the 2009 remastered LP and I prefer this new CD version.  Co...

So just how much vinyl do YOU own?
At one point, well over 1,000.  My three sons, who are in their 30's are into vinyl big-time, so I have given most of the LPs to them.  Have kept:  Beatles re-mastered, McCartney Archive Collection, America, Beach Boys, Chicago, CSNY (collectively...

What is your experience with the law of diminishing returns ?
I had musical training for ten years, starting at age 8, so I believe that I have a pretty good ear.Last year, I had to make a choice between the Magnepan 1.7i's and the 3.7i's.  The 3.7i's are more than twice the price of the 1.7i's.   I audition...
What unknown musical artist would you like to share with your fellow audiophiles?
Van Dyke Parks, who wrote lyrics to some of the best Beach Boys songs - Surf's Up and Heroes and Villains.  He has several solo albums and is a brilliant arranger.

I need a subwoofer/sub-bass opinion from you
I've done a lot of research on subs.  Hsu Research makes a fantastic product.  Recently, I e-mailed Hsu regarding several technical questions and I received a very thorough and very professional response, as well as a recommendation that I add a h...
What were your humble beginnings on the path to high end audio?
1971: AR 2AX speakers, a KLH Model 51 receiver (yes, KLH made receivers and it was actually a good one), and a Garrard Zero 100 turntable.  The best part was that I wrote a music review column in graduate school, as a result of which I received hu...
