Jazz for someone who doesn't like jazz.
Sounds like you would like progressive jazz more than traditional jazz.Surprised that no one has mentioned Pat Metheny Group. Many have mentioned Weather Report. Also Carla Bley - especially the earlier albums with large groups.
New Speaker / System Suggestions
Magnepan 1.7i's, which start at a$1,995.  Your Yamaha integrated with160 watts per channel at 4 ohms is more than enough to make the speakers sing.  With over 50 years as an audiophile, and having bought more than one dozen brands of speakers, the...
How do you sort your LPs?
Here's one I haven't heard yet:  due to the size of my record cabinets (IKEA makes some great ones, I have different configurations ranging from one cube to 2 x 3 cubes that can put placed either way), I separate rock by American artists/groups ve...
How far away from your speakers are you?
Magnepans: 4' from back wall, 3' from side walls, 5' from each other, toed in 15 degrees, 20' from my listening position. Thinking of adding a Magnepan DWM bass panel, separately amped (the bass panel has stereo inputs).  Does anyone use the DWM? ...
what's your opinion on the magazine 'stereo review'??
I liked Stereo Review because they wrote about affordable equipment.  I subscribe to Stereophile and the Absolute Sound but can't afford 90% of the equipment they review!
What should I choose??
In my experience - and I've owned more than a dozen systems over the years - there is a much more discernible difference in the sound of speakers than in the sound of electronics.  Therefore, you should buy the new speakers first.  By the way, I h...

Usless but interesting ....how many of you old timers started with original Large Advents?
My first speakers were Acoustic Research 3A’s. Then I went to Large Advents, then B&W 802s ($1700 at the time).  My last three pairs of speakers have been successively larger Maggie’s. I love the 3.7i’s the most.
Friend needs advice for $8,000 system
I agree with your friend on the Maggies.  I have three pairs and they are great high performance bargains.  But as others above have stated, they require a lot of power to sound their best. He should be looking for an integrated amp of at least 10...
Help me understand John Coltrane .... seriously.
I studied tenor sax from Grades 4 through 12 and my music teacher was a retired jazz musician.  Coltrane is what is known as a "progressive" jazz players.  Progressives use a lot of atonality, which can sound like they're playing the wrong notes, ...
Abbey Road 50th Anniversary
I bought the 3 CD, 1 Blu-Ray set.  The outtakes, which comprise two CDs. are amazing.  They show the songs in early stages of development - 28 tracks. A must for any Beatles fan.  I have the 2009 remastered LP and I prefer this new CD version.  Co...

So just how much vinyl do YOU own?
At one point, well over 1,000.  My three sons, who are in their 30's are into vinyl big-time, so I have given most of the LPs to them.  Have kept:  Beatles re-mastered, McCartney Archive Collection, America, Beach Boys, Chicago, CSNY (collectively...

What is your experience with the law of diminishing returns ?
I had musical training for ten years, starting at age 8, so I believe that I have a pretty good ear.Last year, I had to make a choice between the Magnepan 1.7i's and the 3.7i's.  The 3.7i's are more than twice the price of the 1.7i's.   I audition...
