Quietest fan for room
Good quality ceiling fans are quiet.
How many enjoy low $ second system sound?
Silverline Minuets and vintage Marantz 2235 with original Rega Planet and internet radio. Very enjoyable.
Live Performances Gone Awry
I saw Ted Nugent in the late 1970s and I could swear he peed his pants on stage.
Silverline Minuet "Supreme"
I have a pair of original Minuets in my small living room powered by a vintage Marantz receiver. They are kind of tucked away behind my TV and I run my TV through this system for a poor man's HT (sounds fine for movies and music on channels like P...
Cat-proofing your speakers...
When I got married 20 years ago, 2 cats came along with the deal. I learned to love those cats but I (we) were never able to get them to stop scratching stuff they wanted to scratch. In fact, we could never get them to stop doing anything they wan...
Mapleshade tweaks
I've had mixed results as well. I could never warm up to the brass cones under various components. The brass jumper cable strips are a joke and I ended up tossing them. On the other hand I'm using isopads under my TT right now and they seem to pro...
Phono Preamp-Nothing you like so Build your own?
Bottlehead kits. I have the Seduction, around $500 with some upgrades and sounds great. The Eros is supposed to be significantly better, for $750.
Record weights 'n clamps: Audible improvements ?
Don't know about weights but screwing the clamp on my VPI table on and off every 20 minutes drives me crazy. Lately I just use it on really warped records. I don't notice much difference on most records anyway.
Budget speaker $600 or under recommendations
A third for the Silverline Minuets. I recently put together a similar system for my living room, mainly sound for the tv, internet radio. I have almost no room for speakers. The minuets sound natural and have absolutely amazing bass for their size...
Alternatives to Klipsch Forte II
I have the Forte II's with the excellent Bob Crites upgrades - diaphragms and crossovers. Mine are not bright in my room with my tube gear. Putting them close to the wall and especially in corners really loads the room with bass and makes them sou...
Mapleshade boards under speakers
How does a platform or brass footer "drain vibrations"? Do vibrations act like heat or fluid and flow through materials? Wouldn't footers actually prevent propagation of vibration from an external region (like the floor) to the platform and compon...
Reliable Tube Tester for 6H30 Tubes?
I recently picked up a Mercury Model 1000 tester and it works and appears to provide coherent results. However, after checking a bunch of tubes in my collection, I still wonder about its accuracy and sensitivity. Bottom line is that these are test...
Where's the bass?
I understand. It took me about 5 years with audiophile speakers to realize that I needed bassier sound to really enjoy listening to most of my music collection. I owned JBL 4311 control monitors in the 80s, and what I liked most about those fantas...
Tired of Problems with Tube Equipment
I have been using Quicksilver amps for about 5 years. Zero problems. My complaint with tube gear is that sound quality subtly declines as tubes age, and I'm often wondering if tubes are wearing out somewhere in the system. Time for a tube tester I...
Vandersteen 2CE's
I liked mine best with my Quicksilver M60s or mid monos. Those are pretty beefy 50-60 watt tube amps and they seemed to drive them just fine. The bass was a little fat but I usually like that. I tried a McCormack DNA 125 and Classe DR6 and didn't ...
