Benefits of adding a 10MHz Master Clock to a digital system
@folkfreak  - could not agree more. Have not heard the DCS clock but finally bought a 10MX clock. The improvement was startling. Without the clock there is a fog over inner detail. With the clock everything comes into focus. The higher you go in s...
Are Preamplifier’s Relevant Today or just a Hinderance with Digital Playback ?
does not matter if you use analogue or digital front end. You need a preamp with enough current output to handle the dynamic swings. But don't listen to me or anyone else. Try it yourself, go without a preamp and run DAC directly into power amp (a...
cartridge recommendation for Thorens TD166 MKII
and don't forget, the 540 has one of the best midranges going. one of my fav  carts for under a kilo buck.
Variac or not?
I used to have 6 of these amps back in the day. They are well built, but on quiet passages, the fans can become annoying. Before you do anything you may want to pop the hood and do a visual inspection to see if there are any obvious signs of leaka...
U.K. pressed Deutsche Grammophon LP's...
The best DG vinyl was pressed in Japan by Nippon Grammophon, and later by Polydor KK. They do not have have that bright edge sound some of the German pressings have and are even quieter than the German pressings. And if you like the UK pressed EMI...
Transferring large folders of flac files
@cmjones , you may want to go to the microsoft web site and down load the latest version of synctoy. Does exactly what you want to do. its free and works quite well. I have 4TB of hirez files I needed to move last year so used sync toy to do it. h...
NOS Tubes - Agony or Ecstasy -Part II - The Search
If you want additional detail on identifying NOS valves, check out the Tube monger site. quite a bit of into. https://www.tubemonger.com/
VTL's and KT88's?
@vegasears , thanks! also don't forget or overlook those 12AT7 inputs, they affect the sound too. Try a pair of PSVANE art series or the T-II series if you want more detail. If you want a warmer sound, the Shuguang treasure series will fit the bill.
Manley Chinook Owners Tube Rolling
forgot to add the other thing that makes a huge improvement is replacing the metal film load resistors with Vishay VSR metal foil types. You will measurably drop the noise floor by at least 6db.  @rbtstock , if you contact me off line, can send yo...
VTL's and KT88's?
The best sounding KT88 is the Shuguang WE-KT88 plus red base tubes.  They are 3 dimensional have tonal qualities in spades, but they will not stand up to the high plate voltages on the MB-450, or other VTL amps. If you try a Chinese KT88, you will...
Manley Chinook Owners Tube Rolling
you'll have to find a tech in your area. The replacements are Nichicon XY series film and foil. The originals from manley are metalized film. you can buy the parts from digikey.comhttps://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/nichicon/QYX2A474KTP/211...
Manley Chinook Owners Tube Rolling
try the amperex Holland bottles, and better than any tube rolling is getting rid of those .47uf wima caps in the SS stage. replace em with .47 film and foil Nichicons.  you will be shocked at how much the Chinook opens up.
Is it worthwhile to upgrade an old but quality DAC?
would agree with @hudsonhawk , even a Topping D10 or D30 are going to outperform your old DAC, have XMOS chip for USB input have the later chip set and will cost you less in the long run.
Simple, small footprint tube preamp ?
@flaxxer, since you want something smaller in chassis size and want to tube roll, would suggest you try out the Chinese clone of the Marantz 7 tube preamp. Its a line stage only, has excellent sonics and you can tube roll and capacitor roll to you...
suffering over choice of VTL 6550 signature II or the ARC REF6se
I have listened to both. Ended up getting the 6.5 series II. the 6.5 is more dynamic, the Ref 6SE maybe a bit more tube warmth, but both are very good. Have not heard the Rogue but would guess either one would be a pretty big step up over the Rogu...
