WireWorld HDMI: Starlight 6 VS Island 6
09-10-13: JafantCan you blame him? Here's the thread. Draw your own conclusion. Turns out his upper budget was $8K, not $6K. He was looking for SOTA CD/SACD playback, but also wanted to preserve the viability of his collection of 500 DVDs.
Buying speakers ten or more years old a good idea?
It's like anything else. Some products, whether speakers, amps, or cars, are classics distinguished by a synergistic combination of forward thinking, sound engineering, meticulous manufacturing, and high performance. One sweet spot is the $400-600...
Downsizing my system from tubes to an integrated
The PM8004 is crazy good for $999. You can sometimes pick up a factory refurb for less from Accessories4less.com. They have a really low noise floor and a very neutral, linear, but musically involving presentation. They fly in the face of conventi...
WireWorld HDMI: Starlight 6 VS Island 6
No matter how expensive, a DVD player can't quadruple the native data density. Why is this even a question? I mentioned that example because a few years ago an A-goner asked for advice on the best $6K DVD/CD combo player and EVERY response (and th...
Nasty problem - ideas?
IME, some of the AV Pre/Pro programs set the LFE level too high. You might check the channel levels in your pre/pro and dial back the LFE (sub) output by around 4-5 dB. That's about how much too high my auto setup sets it.
WireWorld HDMI: Starlight 6 VS Island 6
I've had a week for my Redmere/Monoprice cables to burn in, and last night I was so captivated by the picture quality that I kept switching from one source to another--Blu-ray, live cable, DVR, Netflix InstantWatch, and Amazon Video. All were the ...
KAV-280P & TURNTABLE
09-07-13: HrstexAny recommendations as to a topnotch phono preamp to use in front of the Krell? What's your turntable and cartridge? Is budget an issue? Otherwise, there will be plenty of high enders recommending phono stages commensurate with your...
KAV-280P & TURNTABLE
To Jrenman's answer let me add that that phono stage not only supplies the extreme low level gain you need to amplify a cartridge's output, it runs the signal through the RIAA equalization curve, a mirror image of the equalization applied when the...
'80s Perreax, new Emotiva, lightly used Odyssey?
Hotmailjbc: Yes, I think Odyssey would be the smart middle road here and I think one or two of them are in my future. I'd like something with very wide bandwidth, fast risetime, and a very low noise floor, and that's where I felt that the Emotiva ...
WireWorld HDMI: Starlight 6 VS Island 6
I'm not afraid of spending money for good cables. I have PS Audio XStream Reference Bi-wire speaker cables and Kimber Hero interconnects in my HT system. But the high bandwidth requirements and typically long cable runs of HDMI make me think that ...
For 35 years, I'm an Audiophile wanna be
If you have the rack space, a pair of Odyssey Stratos Mono or Mono Extreme amps would give you the power you need (180 wpc) for the Maggies, plus stability into 2 ohm loads, and bandwidth out to 400Khz. Only $2500 for the basic pair. The 150 wpc S...
Legendary used amp, or economical new one?
Well, I went down to the hi-fi shop that had the used Perreaux, and hooked it up to a modest used pair of Aperion 2-way towers. The speed, clarity, pace, and--still most importantly--the correct timbres and tonalities came through. It easily delin...
Legendary used amp, or economical new one?
Csontos, thanks for your information. And thanks to everybody for putting in on this. Getting a new Emotiva for $449 w/5-yr warranty was a pretty compelling option. You may find this hard to believe, but the Emotiva's large footprint (it's deeper ...
'80s Perreax, new Emotiva, lightly used Odyssey?
08-30-13: CsontosI've just responded to your first thread. This one's a bit redundant?Yep, literally redundant. When my first attempt didn't show up for a couple of days, I thought maybe the mods hadn't received it or didn't like it, so I reworded...
Legendary used amp, or economical new one?
08-30-13: CsontosIf you've done your research on the PMF-1150B, you're aware of it's reputation as a truly hi-end product. The Emotiva is not.And that's a perfect summary of my thought processes. I'm sure the Emotiva is a nice unit for the money, ...
