What is the best planar or electrostatic speaker?
For $35K, I'm sure you could cut a deal with your local Magnepan/JL dealer for a pair of Maggie 20.7s and a pair of Gotham G213s. I'm not so sure that the BGs the OP is shilling would be better.Or pair the 20.7s with a pair of JL Fathom F212s for ...
Best Speaker for classical music
01-07-14: Wolf_garciaI listen to 100 piece orchestras frequently, always have, and have a well rounded background decades long in myth-free audio as a professional musician/recording engineer and hifi fan. I stick by what I say...for example, my c...
Best Speaker for classical music
01-05-14: Wolf_garciaThe distinction between types of music relative to speaker design is silly. A well recorded jazz piano trio has every bit as complex and demanding a tonal pallette as symphonic music, and is only constrained or affected by lev...
What is the best planar or electrostatic speaker?
01-04-14: Douglas_schroederThe new BG could be very nice; I have heard others similar and there is an appealing sound to them. What's the MSRP? $35K.
subwoofer for music?
Neat's own product description says:The visible main drive unit handles bass and midrange and is isobarically loaded by similar drive units located inside the cabinet. So if there are isobarically loaded drive units (plural) inside the cabinet, I ...
subwoofer for music?
01-03-14: Kr4"You can't make a categorical statement based on driver diameter. Stiffness and weight of the cone plus driver excursion (how much air does it displace?), and cabinet volume are all part of the equation. Fed enough power, my Mirages c...
subwoofer for music?
01-02-14: Bob_reynoldsWill 2 subs help stereo imaging?I don't think there is any notion of imaging at bass frequencies. Really? Well I have a notion of it because I hear the imaging pop into 3D when I get subwoofers integrated properly. It's not t...
What is the modern equivalent to the L1090?
01-02-14: Sid42It sounds to me like you are still in love with your ADS speakers. If you feel the need for something better, why not pick up a pair of L1590/2's, one of the best speakers they ever produced. I guarantee once you have them, you won'...
Speaker decision $3000-3500...help
Magneplanar 1.7s plus $1500 worth of subwoofers, which, for example, could be a pair of Gallo TR 1D-8's at $1198, a single JL E110 ($1800 list), or a pair of SVS NSD-12SDs for $1198.These panel/sub combos would give you the honesty and immediacy o...
Shocking 3D sound in 2 channel
12-31-13: StringreenJohnny53....it just might be your room. Which one? I would say the beginning of this for me goes back to when I worked at a mid-fi/high end store in 1975, where the manager set up some Dahlquist DQ-10s with a pre-amp capable of...
Shocking 3D sound in 2 channel
If I can't get a solid, centered image from a mono source or an intended center solo voice in a stereo mix, the speakers aren't set up correctly and/or there's a phase problem. If I can't get the speakers to sonically disappear, I don't want them.
What is the modern equivalent to the L1090?
What Brownsfan said!!!I had a pair of ADS L1090s from 1987 to 1996. Since then I have had a couple of pairs of Mirage speakers and liked them a lot; I still use a pair of M5si's in my HT rig.BUTÂ… I started craving that neutral, articulate, room-fi...

12-27-13: DavtCaune11, try Magnolia hifi, part of BestBuy, for close out pair. They are likely trying to get rid of their Cremona's to make way for the Olympica. One of the pairs up for sale on A-gon is from Magnolia AV. In fact, it's the pair I he...
Help with buying used Sonus Faber Cremona m
SF discontinued the Cremona line. Look for closeouts. They also show up used in good condition in the classifieds here. You *might* be able to score a pair domestically for $5K. They're worth saving up for and I'm with you about SF Cremonas vis-a-...
