Ortofon 2MBronze; Quintet Red; Vivo Red???
I have always been impressed with the synergy between a Rega 3-series turntable and the Rega Exact (now series 2) cartridge. It's a little more money than what you've mentioned, but it has this "rightness" on a wide variety of material, and althou...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
03-09-15: LewmJohnny, I am very glad that the new Pioneer exists, because ... it may help, like the Technics SL1200 did, to spread the word of the virtues of DD. But what "vibration issues" are you referring to? Maybe resonance would be a better w...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
With the release of the Pioneer PLX-1000, which addresses the vibration issues of vintage DD turntables, there's no need to live dangerously. It's in current production, you'd be buying it under warranty, and it's a very affordable $699.
Which Turntable??
03-08-15: SchubertEXCEPT, the first Pioneer he tested had very sloppy bearings. BIG if.Not really. They're evidently adjustable. I've read of the same thing in a couple of other reviews. The user or a tech adjusts the bearings and it's good to go.
Which Turntable??
Pioneer recently released a new DD turntable to fill the gap left by the Technics SL12x0 line discontinued in 2010. The new one takes care of weaknesses in the old design that should appeal to audiophiles:1) Motor with about double the torque2) Ru...
Which Turntable??
What is your goal? The Elemental is a USB table. This means it not only has a built-in analog-to-digital converter (ADC), but also a built-in phono preamp, so you can plug it directly into any standard line level preamp. Do you need these things o...
Classical Record Labels and Recording Engineers...
03-03-15: MelmWasn't there a second tape head reading the music ahead so that the spacing could be varied automatically? Or did that come later? That came later, and even with that, I think a preview tapehead with automatic spacing wouldn't have t...
Classical Record Labels and Recording Engineers...
For the original pressings of the Mercury Living Presence series, whenever Wilma Cozart Fine was involved, she was previewing the score as the master tape played, and signaled the mastering engineer when to widen or narrow the groove spacing depen...
Classical music comps
A collection of Rossini overtures can be nice. They contain lots of familiar music (e.g., the Lone Ranger theme embedded in the William Tell Overture), but it's nice to hear it in the context of an entire 5-8 minute overture as opposed to over-sho...
Mirage M7si V Def tech BP 20
What Zd542 said!Mirage's M_si series is great. The M7si is OK but from the M5si on up they're awesome! I've had miy M5si's for almost 19 years now and have no intention of swapping them out. An excellent condition used pair (when you can find them...
High end cartridge made in USA?
Daveyf: For UK-made MC carts, I was thinking of Rega, Linn, and Goldring; I'd forgotten about Decca. So yeah, the UK is pretty well represented here.As for your fundamental question, you could turn the question around: Why did the moving coil cart...
High end cartridge made in USA?
02-21-15: SchubertWhy not ? Same reason little is made in USA, average American sees little point is working for 50 cents an hour.True for a lot of things these days, but the manufacture of moving coil carts in the US never got much of a foothold,...
High end cartridge made in USA?
Ortofon invented the moving coil cartridge, but Grado invented and patented the *stereo* moving coil cartridge. Similarly, Beyer Dynamic invented headphones, but Koss invented stereo headphones. Columbia invented the LP; RCA invented the stereo LP...
What is a Headshell and what does it do ?
At a minimum, you're generally going to have to adjust vertical tracking force for each cartridge, and usually anti-skating as well. Most cartridge have their own individual sweet spot within the recommende tracking force range. Not mentioned up to...
Your favorite LP nobody has ever heard of
That's easy. The long departed Norwegian singer Radka Toneff's last album, "Fairytales." Out of print but still available NOS for a reasonable price from Elusive Disc. It's just her and a pianist. The recording, mastering, and pressing qualities a...
