Need help buying a used turntable for $500 Another vote for the Technics. At $399 its build quality, speed consistency, and durability is stupid good for the money. I think it's particularly good for the kinds of music you'll be playing--jazz and classic rock. It shines in bottom end drive...
what causes sibilance? Don't forget to keep the stylus clean. That was my first experience with spitty sibilance 35 years ago--a big ball of fuzz stuck to the needle. Use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and then a soft brush to remove the Magic Eraser residue.
what causes sibilance? Several things can cause excessive sibilance.Another source: I get increased, spitty sibilance when the VTA is set too high.I have a Technics SL1210, so I can play with VTA very easily.

One of the respondents, Jdcook, installed an RB300 on an Origin Live Technics armboard. Scroll down to his posts on the subject where he also mentions some car...
Getting started in vinyl for under $100 I believe the Allsop Orbitrac 2 has been discontinued. If you can find one at a vendor, consider it NOS. I believe the pad replacements and cleaning fluid are still in stock, though. I got one of the last ones at Acoustic Sounds back in May.
Blue Ray & HD DVD discs There are many HD DVD combo disks that will play in HD DVD and in standard DVD players. I have two: Letters from Iwo Jima and 300. They're 2-sided; HD DVD on one side and SD DVD on the other.
Getting started in vinyl for under $100 I think you're right. I got back into vinyl in February by getting a Yamaha P-mount belt-drive table at a garage sale for $2. I then put an Ortofon P-mount OM-10 on it, put some Vibrapods under the feet and a felt mat on top of the rubber to contr...
"S" shaped tonearm ? But some of these "S" Arms have their "Birth" only from Design reasons. Or marketing reasons. For the last 20 years, a new arm wouldn't be taken seriously unless it has a straight shaft and integrated headshell. But back in the '60s and '70s when ...
Which HT reveiver to replace Nak av-10? The most future-resistant AV receivers on the market right now are from Onkyo. Unless something has changed in the last 2 weeks, they're the only ones who have fully implemented HDMI 1.3 switching and decoding--at least as much as is currently ava...
tonearms & cartridge compliance I agree with Sidssp. High compliance carts pretty much limits you to the few remaining Shures, Grado Prestige, and Ortofon mag carts. Medium compliance gets you all those wonderful high-output MCs, some mag carts and many LOMCs as well.Which two t...
"S" shaped tonearm ? Jrw40:what is the reason a company ,such as denon for instance to put an "S" shaped tonearm on there table. ive had both straight and S . and while not high end , i currently have the denon dp500m table . ive heard nor seen an advantage to either,...
"S" shaped tonearm ? Professional designers are also beholden to the prevailing design theories and manufacturing methods currently available. Tonearm manufacture can only tolerate a few design types and remain cost-effective and competitive, so designs that don't fit...
"S" shaped tonearm ? I think definitely the J and S-shaped arms evolved out of designing 9" arms (as opposed to straight 12" DJ arms) to work with a universal headshell. I remember the SME arm of the early '70s being J-shaped. The Japanese turntables of that era were ...
At $5,000.....any thoughts? 10-06-07: FlrnlambWell, looks like I'm the only one still interested in this thread. I was hoping we could get the doc to throw out all here new audio equipment, and maybe try some some other things instead. Guess that's not going to happen...I wa...
