$ 2500 ....Stay with Vandersteens ??...what else ?
Going from the Vandersteen 1c to the 2CE is certainly a logical upgrade. At the same price, however, I think it would be worthwhile to audition a pair of Mirage OMD-15s. There are some things that it would share with the Vandy 2CEs, such as smooth...
Inexpensive integrated for Usher S-520
I own and love an Onkyo A-9555 and strongly recommend it for your situation. The price is totally right and you'll probably get your best frequency extension out of your list of candidates. It puts out about 100 wpc into 8 ohms and near 200 into 4...
Biwiring and impedance
More specifically, how would this work out?My amp has two sets of switchable speaker terminals, "Spkr A" and "Spkr B".If I single bi-wire, I'd have a single pair of bananas connected to the amp's Spkr A terminals, but which would diverge into sepa...
what cartridge to buy
Hi, Majic,My turntable is a Technics SL1210 M5G (which has the improved tonearm wiring). I have it sitting on threaded brass cones instead of the stock feet, which sit on a 1.5" thick butcher block cutting board, which sits on a pair of silicon ge...
Why Not Bring Back Analog, Reel to Reel Tape
10-12-08: JsmanI would agree with you as for the time part, but for the best sound the analog tape is hard to beat. Yes, we actually have no argument here. If one were able to buy open reel 7.5ips direct real time copies of the master tape, and th...
built-in receiver phono preamps, how good are they
As owner of a Cambridge 640p phono stage, I'd say that it will outperform the majority of phono stages in mass-produced receivers. It may be a closer call with the phono stages built into ADS and Tandberg receivers, but those are hardly mainstream...
what cartridge to buy
10-11-08: MinglesHave you considered an Audio Technica AT150MLX? I haven't heard it but it gets glowing reviews. The output is 4.0 mV so it will work with your phono stage.I'm the guy who wrote that glowing thread about the AT150MLX, and 4 months ...
Why Not Bring Back Analog, Reel to Reel Tape
10-10-08: Jsmanjohnnyb53 the only flaw in your post is the fact that a TP tape from the master is second or third generation, and the the Lp is much further down the road. More like fifth, six, or seventh generation. There is never a flaw in my pos...
Why Not Bring Back Analog, Reel to Reel Tape
10-10-08: JayteaBy the way, arent most (if not all) vinyl reissues were re-mastered from "original master tape"?Yeah, but analog master tapes by the '80s had a s/n ratio of 100 dB or more. Even the studio master tapes of the '70s had an s/n of 80 ...
Help: Integrated amp for Era Design 5
I know I'm starting to sound like a broken record on this, but the Onkyo A-9555 integrated puts out 170-200 watts into 4 ohms, and can muster peaks of 80 amps. It lists for $800 and sounds every penny of it (and more, really), but you can get B-st...
Adcom upgrade ,or stay put ?
I hope you're in an area where you can audition lots of amps. What Charlie123 says about Bryston is definitely true, but Adcom has not stood still since the GFA-555. Their new MOSFet amps are far faster, more transparent, liquid, linear, sweeter, ...
Times when there is too much LFE...
Well, that may explain why my experience was so different from yours. The bass on the Blu-ray was powerful for sure, but it wasn't overblown, gratuitous, or annoying. I'm familiar with overblown and gratuitous LFE from the HD cablecasts of the Sta...
Times when there is too much LFE...
Perhaps it would be helpful to know what your audio setups are. Were you using lossless Dolby TrueHD via HDMI or downconverted to DD 5.1 via SP/DIF?
Powerful Tube Amp for SF Strads?
The top line VTL monoblocks--the Reference or the Siegfried. This is the best-sounding, most seductively addicting and at the same time most dynamic amp I have *ever* heard. They give you the best of everything: Magic of tubes, wickedly powerful, ...
Great sounding new vinyl
0-07-08: DcstepThis is the way it was in vinyl's heyday, prior to CD. More LPs sucked than sounded great. I didn't buy too many LPs in the '80s, but these days, I've bought *lots* of used LPs from the '80s, and I find the opposite to be true. Whet...
