New upgrade alternatives for the Technics SL12x0
Tvad, did you get the tonearm rewire? I have a two or three theories about Marc's "persistent darkness" comments that don't match my experience either:1) I have an M5G, which has factory OFC tonearm wire. Marc is using a Mk2 with stock wire. Maybe...
Turntable cones/spikes or shock absorbing feet?
05-16-09: CytocycleUnfortunately I have no experience with the Soundcare product but have also been interested in it because of the lower cost.I have an audio buddy who installed some SuperSpikes on his SL1210 M5G. I'll write him and ask what he t...

New upgrade alternatives for the Technics SL12x0
05-16-09: ZenblasterJohnny-You mentioned wrapping teflon tape around your arm. How did you actually get it to stay put as it has no adhesion?I use garden variety teflon pipe thread tape like this. I just wrap the last bit perpendicular to the arm ...
Surround Sound Processor Suggestions
Outlaw 990. Balanced inputs and outputs, DVI video 3-in/1-out video switching, 7.1 analog inputs, surround decoding for DD, DD-EX, DTS, DTS-ES, DTS-Neo, Dolby ProLogic IIx, upconverting to 24/96, etc. Excellent, linear, and transparent (yet smooth...
From tiny Silverline's to slightly bigger PSB's
15x34 with vaulted ceiling and open wall is a friggin' big room! That calls for a line array, but even the "economical" ones are $6K. Even DIY kits run $2K and up.While we're on the subject of a high sensitivity horn system (Klipsch Forte), conside...
Best recording
How about trying VHS Hi-Fi? Fresh high quality blank tapes are still readily available, and the machines weigh a lot less than a Studer and cost nearly nothing.
An Advent Guy
See Harry Pearson's review in The Absolute Sound archives for the stacked pair. Mine sound better due to the capacitor replacement. That I will do. In the meantime, here's J. Gordon Holt's review of a single pair of regular Advents from Jan. 1976....
Front End Advice Sought
Knowing she's in her '70s, even though I'm a Technics SL12x0 fan, I say get an automatic, whether it's a good condition Denon DP47F or a new model Thorens. It'll take care of the stylus and the records, and she can focus on playing the music.
From tiny Silverline's to slightly bigger PSB's
How big is your listening room, and how contained is it (4 walls, vaulted ceiling, open architecture, etc.)? The Minuet has two problems in filling a large space: 1) Its radiating area is tiny with a single 3-1/2" woofer, and 2) its measured sensi...
Front End Advice Sought
Yeah, let's not forget that as finicky as WE see the LP playback process, there was a time when everybody did it.Still, I think a $1K Thorens single-play automatic or auto shutoff with factory-mounted and aligned cartridge would be the most no-has...
From tiny Silverline's to slightly bigger PSB's
PSBs are incredibly linear at all their price points, with a nice, natural room-filling dispersion. In general PSB and Paradigm sound better than their asking prices would indicate, as they use Canada's National Research Foundation's sophisticated...
New turntable recommendations I have a MM-7 now
Man, if I was in the market for a <$3K turntable, i wouldn't part with the money without trying the new Well Tempered Amadeus at $2895, even if I had to fly or make a road trip to a dealer. You've got the marriage of Bill Firebaugh's unconventi...
ARCAM + WILSON Sophia review
In the demos I've heard, the Wilsons really come alive with good tube electronics like VTL and ARC, connected up with Transparent Cable.
stereo reciever for sonus faber grand piano Home
At $1300 budget, you're within sniffin' distance of a couple of great switching integrateds--the PS Audio C-100 Trio at $1595 and the NuForce at $1695. If you want to stay well within budget, I can definitely vouch for the way the Onkyo A-9555 int...
