Budget Tube Preamp with Remote BTW, I also listen to a lot of classical and jazz. I've used the JD5T to push a couple of different 1980's amps and it's always sounded really good. Very good with vocals, cello, strings, horns, percussion, you name it.
Budget Tube Preamp with Remote Since mid-March I have been using a Jolida JD-5T line stage to drive a reconditioned 1981 Heathkit AA-1600. The Jolida is a nice little unit, pretty substantial actually with good-sized power supply and IEC AC socket so you can upgrade with a bett...
Power Cords Snake Oil ?? 07-24-11: DanomcrooI am by no means attempting to besmirch any product.Yes you are. But, $1200 worth of acoustic wall panels and bass traps will ALWAYS be a better investment than a magic power cord or holy speaker wire.No it isn't. Room treatment ...
Technics 1200 turntable, do I need a Phono Pre? It's the Cambridge 640A that really kicks butt under $200. I used one for 3 years until I replaced it with a Jolida tube unit at more than double the price. If you don't spring for the 640A, you might as well get the Audio Technica PEQ3.
Technics 1200 turntable, do I need a Phono Pre? Yeah, what electronics are you plugging the Technics into? The Technics doesn't have a phono stage but your receiver may.
Interconnects: solid or hollow core wire? I like a noise-rejecting braided or woven bundle of various gauges of solid core wire. Examples include Kimber, AudioQuest, Cardas, and the Zu I have, which even varies the metallurgy and dielectric among the individual strands, and PS Audio XStre...
Should i go Boulder 1060 or Jeff Rowland 625 I too would put the Rowland and Boulder at the same level of performance. I would lean toward the Rowland in favor of system matching. With the Rowland you *know* the impedance matchups and voicing together will be spot-on.Plus, to these ears the ...
Is McIntosh a stepping stone into HI/FI? 07-15-11: Es347I've found that MAC electronics match up with any speaker you can throw at them. Other amps having higher resolution?...that's what everyone seems to say but the many A/B comparisons I have witnessed hasn't proven that. I think Mac ...
Is McIntosh a stepping stone into HI/FI? 07-05-11: Tzh21yThe mc275 is slower, but I love it. Heck it is a tube amp! I could probably say that it is slow, rounded, yes, midrange beauty, yess, colored, maybe a little, and I think I am going to put another record on right now. An audiophile...
Good turntable needed, need recomendations. At your budget, you would be really hard-pressed to beat the DPS Ayre turntable. It's right at your price point, and I've heard it in the same context as the $30K SME 'table, and it sounds like it's in the same league. You don't have to spend a lo...

Is McIntosh a stepping stone into HI/FI? 07-01-11: Tzh21yGreat stuff. I own one MC275 and I just keep putting record after record on, and before you know it half the day has gone. I have never listened to my records and music so much.To quote Napoleon Dynamite, "Luck-eee!"How long have y...
The Physics of Electricity The difference between garden variety electrical cord and expensive signal cable is revealed in the OP's original question. His question is based on the presumption that electrical cables and signal cables have the same job--to conduct electricity...
Is McIntosh a stepping stone into HI/FI? When the straight wire/minimalist designs--spearheaded by the original Mark Levinson preamps and meterless amps--came into fashion, McIntosh with its old school face of knobs for bass, treble, mono, stereo reverse, and balance, and SS power amps w...
Replace pwr cord w/IEC socket on vintage gear? I must have gotten lucky when I plugged this Heathkit in and got the optimum orientation. It has a 2-prong plug and its noise floor is subterranean. I hear low level details on familiar recordings (all in correct musical perspective) that I hadn't... |
