Sssss...sibilance?
Check your 'heavy-gauge stranded copper speaker cables'. Try something not so heavy and not so stranded. A couple runs per side of 20ish gauge insulated solid core hookup wire will knock your socks off. A practically free experiment. Or buy someth...
DH Labs IC's - BL-1 vs. Air Matrix vs. Revelation
I don't think you can really put too much upfront analysis into cable selection, so don't be down on silver without giving it a try.You can spend infinite amounts of time and money on cables. If you are happy with what you've got, don't spoil it. ...
DH Labs IC's - BL-1 vs. Air Matrix vs. Revelation
I have tried both BL-1 and Air Matrix, but not Revelation. The AM is better than BL-1 and close to my reference Nordost SPM. The AM is missing just the last little bit of life vs. the Nordost. It still makes you get up and dance. If SPM is a clear...
Grado Platinum VS Dynavector 10x4 MkII
I own both the Grado Reference (the Reference) and the Dyna 10x4 MkII. I really like them both, but the one that stays in is the Grado. For three times the price it ought to. However, the comparison is really close. Both are very smooth throughout...
SACD - Just Starting Out
Absolutely get 'New Favorite' by Alison Krause if you like bluegrass. It's a bit more pop than pure bluegrass, but the music and the recording is excellent. This is one where you can't believe that the CD layer and the SACD layer were taken from t...
Should Class A Amps be left on??
Both tube and solid state amps can reach a stable operating temperature in about 15 minutes. I see no reason to leave the amp on when no one is listening just to save the warmup time. The electricity alone is enough to justify this. Didn't your pa...
TUBE or S/S Phono Amp with an all s/s system?
I'm happy with what I've got at the moment. However, I often see the ARC PH-3 for sale on Audiogon at reasonable prices.
TUBE or S/S Phono Amp with an all s/s system?
I had a system with a Krell KAV 300i and an Audio Research PH-3 and the Grado Reference. It was a great match. The PH-3 (or PH-3 SE) is a hybrid FET input 6922 output. I am still using the PH-3 and the Grado, but not the Krell as I have moved on t...
What is the finest SACD's you ever heard?
The 'New Favorite' SACD by Alison Krause. I never found her other stuff very engaging, but this one pulled me in. The recording is superb and the mix sounds different than the CD layer. I don't know if that's my imagination or not.
Magnetic levitating turntable shelf-opinions?
As Ed says, my platform does only isolate in the vertical dimension, as the others are blocked by bearings and posts. The fact that you can't levitate in more than one dimension was derived in the previous century. The platform does act like it is...
Magnetic levitating turntable shelf-opinions?
I built one for my TT after moving it to a location where floor vibrations could not be completely dampened. My major problem was keeping the magnets apart. They can easily be coaxed into flying together unexpectedly and any unfortunate appendages...
Bi-amping ML Aerius i's.
I used ML SL3's with a Krell KAV 300i on the bottom and BAT VK60 mono's on the top and the sound was great, much better than either set of amps alone. I could have easily gotten by with a single VK60 on the top which is closer to your 30W Joule El...
Opinions:Roksan Xerxes turntable
I have two older Roksan Xerxes' tables one of which is in use (circa '90) and one on the shelf (circa '85). The new one was found and repaired to try a different arm (Rega 900). The plinth drooping problem is very real and is certain to affect you...
Removing fine scratches on tt dustcover
Well I haven't tried this on a dust cover, but it works for airplane windows. Micro-Mesh cushioned abrasives. They come in sample packs with grit as fine as 12000 for hand rubbing and velcro backed pads for random orbital sanders to 3000 I think. ...
Opinions on Marantz SA1 SACD CD Player
I have had an SA-1 for about a month and find it to be exceptional as both an SACD and a CD player. It is my first SACD equipment and although promising the software just isn't available, although what I have heard is very good. For CD it is both ...
