LP eccentricity, spindle hole center,The fix??????
One thing to note is that there is nothing to prevent the eccentricity to be different on the two sides of the record. For example, the record may be perfectly centered on one side but off on the other, or it may be off on both sides but in differ...
Rebuilding LP12; which tone arm
I think you're fine with a rewired RB-300. I would agree with a counterweight mod - a number of them you can install yourself. I had a rewired RB-300 with Origin Live mod which I preferred the the Linn Ittok that came with my LP-12. Specifically, ...
Tonearm Nightmare
You said that the arm was rewired. Is it possible that the wiring got twisted when it was rewired and that could be causing the problem? Remember that for a number of years with the VPI arms they had no antiskate provision except for twisting the ...
10 Great Classical LP's
Morin's book sounds very interesting, but remember that the original poster asked for 10 records, the NPR book discusses "only 350" and Morin expands that to God knows how many. Of course the NPR book is limited, that's the idea! It's a start, whi...
10 Great Classical LP's
I agree with Sdcampbell. The NPR guide has the most popular classical compositions as well as recommended recordings of them. As you start collecting those pieces you'll develop your own tastes and explore further with music and composers you enjo...
How we clean records in Texas
Y'all must come from one of the poorer suburbs. In the oil patch we never clean our records, when we want to play one we just open another factory sealed record and play it - once.
Cart Reccomendation for P5 re: roomate idiocy
One thing, if you get the AT150MLX or Ortofon you can always remove the stylus when you aren't there and lock it in a safe place. That way your roommate can't damage what isn't there. :-) Switching styli shouldn't wear them out too quickly, at lea...
SME V with MINT LP TRACTOR
Having the correct alignment depends on the arm pivot to stylus distance, which is the effective length, the offset angle and the overhang. What Yip is referring to is that the SME V has fixed mounting holes Irather than slots such as you see on m...
Which tonearm should I keep?
I stand corrected on the mass of the Hadcock, it is indeed a medium mass arm as Audiofeil says. I was thinking of the original Hadcocks, which were low mass arms. In terms of Hadcock and Music Maker, I only know what I read, which is that the Musi...
Which tonearm should I keep?
One consideration is effective mas. Low mass arms run around 5-7 gms, intermediate mass arms such as the SME V, Linn Ittok and Ekos, Rega RB-300 and descendants, etc. run around 10-13 gms and are generally what most modern MCs are designed around....
78 RPM turntable
A Lenco idler drive turntable is a good choice because many 78s were not recorded at 78 rpm, but anywhere between around 60 to 90 plus rpm. The idler drive Lencos have a continuously variable speed between 33 rpm up to around 90 rpm. However, they...
Worth upgrading tonearm cable?
The Rega is a slightly longer tonearm than the Linn, roughly 237-240 mm for the Rega vs. 229 mm for the Linn. If you switch tonearms you'll need a new arm board.
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
Raul,I agree, these are not conclusive comparisons. I also left out the qualifier where Albert wrote that his preference could have been due to the different cartridges. However, I think the overall point is that the Garrard was not obviously outc...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
I think the reason for buying a classic turntable is a combination of cost and sound quality. In terms of cost, a turntable such as a Lenco idler drive can still be bought on ebay for a few hundred dollars and with modifications and a DIY plinth c...
Amp for Quad ESL 57
The most extensive "trial" of amps for Quads (originals and Wayne Picquet modded )I have heard of was done a couple years ago by Robin Wyatt, of Robyatt Audio, and a couple of his friends - Gary Krakow, the tech columnist for MSNBC and David Chesk...
