Considering moving to separates with a tube preamp-appreciate recommendations
Your issue, as has been pointed out, is Dynaudio Evoke 50. That's their second from bottom lineup. Stop trying to fix the preamp etc and adding more clutter in pursuit of a delusion. Look at better speakers, including Dynaudio's own lines up from...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
@decooney’s question and commentary points out an enduring quandary with integral floorstanders that are meant to run truly full range, versus using outboard subwoofers we know how truly deep bass sound waves work within a listening room... our r...
Casual listening
there is a major difference between being immersed in something, feeling the music -- vs -- being evaluative or analytical in your focus - both are types of intentful listening, but quite different -- one is for enjoyment, the other might well be ...
Selling on Audiogon
click this then read what is there, especially the FAQ’s and section about how to get started selling gear on this site ... it isn't hard... good luck
Casual listening
there certainly are different usage occasions for a hifi good ones perform to make the owner/listener happy whichever the occasion may be, be it supplying casual background ambient tunes, to the most intent, focused listening
12AX7 use in EVO 100 line
yep -- good quiet 12ax7’s, american or western european nos or otherwise old stock from the good ol days, especially matched pairs -- are getting quite pricey, whereas relatively speaking au7’s are still plentiful and thus reasonably priced
Building stands for Harbeth 40.2's
@whipsaw agree with you - alan shaw can be a tricky dude... in spite of the harbeths being excellent speakers... he is the business mind and owner behind the brand, and as an expert capitalist, you can count on him to say what serves his commerc...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
Harbeths can certainly play anything you want to hear, as do any well designed full range speakers. agree with this comment 100% often folks who want to ’rock out’ are seeking a degree of sizzle, rasp and other forms of sonic distortion that v...

@jpipes you have a terrific amp in the h390... it is hard to beat, but a tubed pre + a ss or hybrid power amp will yield a slightly rounder, softer presentation but perhaps one with improved soundstaging i think you have excellent amplifier can...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
@desalvo55 unless your room is truly huge and/or you listen crazy loud, 60 push pull triode tube watts should be plenty (certainly 100+ pentode watts will be)... mon 40’s work in the nearfield (take tom mallin’s experience with many grains of s...
Harbeth 40.3's. Should I buy them?
among dynamic loudspeakers, big harbeths like big spendors and big proacs, are akin to 'the girl you marry for long term happiness'... substantive, refined, all arounders for a lifetime of satisfaction, as opposed to so many modern high tech speak...
Choosing new cables
@bobheinatz you are getting some good responses, now that folks see what you have in place currently in terms of gear and cabling - excellent system btw! 👍 that the responses are all over the map is to be expected, but i think i am seeing a dev...
Choosing new cables
bob, we can help you best if you carefully list your system and your cables (as well as what aspects of sound you would like to improve) may take a little time, but i think it will be worth it in the quality of responses you get if you have a hi...
Best Preamp to Pair with Acurus A-250 and Vandersteen 3 Signature Speakers
If I were you, hold off on selling that Acurus amp. i disagree in this case i would get whatever money you can from selling the acurus and put that towards something better sounding the tubed preamp idea into the acurus, driving vandy 3a’s, i...
Best Preamp to Pair with Acurus A-250 and Vandersteen 3 Signature Speakers
in my recollection (i had both an acurus dia100 as well as an a250 power amp back in the day) acurus is classic early-gen solid state... raw power without any finesse... shrill lean sizzly gritty - i had totem 1 speakers at the time and the combo ...
