Novice ears or unrealistic expectations?
Can you borrow a tube amplifier from your dealer? Is so, I recommend giving it a try. You may or may not like it, but I imagine it will "open" up the sound in comparison to what you have tried. I do not think that "tweaks" will get you what you ar...
audiophile grade sub panel and breakers?
You may want to contact Audiowaves here on agon. I recently met Jeff W and he really seems to know electrical stuff. Best, Jeff L
Better than my 32" Sony Wega XBR?
I stopped by a big electronics store last night. The salesperson told me that in his opinion there is no flat panel tv that equals the CRT for shadow detail. He said he bought the last XBR tv his store had for less than $500 and will not upgrade i...
Who has the best plasma monitor these days
Tony, maybe we should post this as a new thread? jeff
Tube amp for Sonus Faber Extrema?
I have a pair of guarneris and I would love to try the Extremas one day. My question is, since the Extremas require so much power to control the driver, do you lose the kind of subtle detail and beauty that the guarneris do so well?I assume you pi...
Who has the best plasma monitor these days
I would love to replace my 32" Sony Wega XBR television with a flat panel. But, every flat panel I've seen does not have any detail in the shadow areas.Do any of these flat panels compete with my Sony Wega XBR for detail in the shadows?Do plasmas ...
Spikes between speakers & stands, up or down?
Rhljazz, excellent point. I wonder if seating the speaker spike in a concave bowl or cone would reduce or eliminate any loss of energy due to friction between the speaker cones and the stand surface (or vice versa). Jeff
Spikes between speakers & stands, up or down?
I'm not good at physics, so feel free to tear down this hypothesis (only for speakers on stands). For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction. So, when the speaker cone moves back and forth, some of its energy may get spent moving the ...
K&K phono stage
Like Capeman, the KandK was my first kit building experience. To practice, I went online and bought a couple of cheap electronic kits at about $10 each just to practice a little soldering and removal of same before getting started on the real deal...
GIRL NEWBIE
It is a little unconventional, but for a sound that would far surpass any of the commercial integrated solutions, look for a Berning MicroZotl used here on audiogon. Match that with your ipod headphones until you can buy a decent pair of headphone...
New or used???
Rather than putting $5,000 toward speakers, you may want to consider putting something like $2,500 toward a good integrated tube amp (example: used VTL integrated IT-85) and the other $2,500 toward a used pair of Sonus Faber Grand Pianos or someth...
Tube amps with BALLS in the low end registrer ???
I have a CAT Ultimate preamp and it has great bass. If its an indicator of their amps, you may want to look at CAT. I also have a pair of Joule Stargates which, although they do not have slam and I don't expect them to in my setup, they do have th...

Stupidgood: Ars Sonum
I love the concept of "Smartbad". I'm afraid that, for me, most high end audio equipment falls into that category. I think there are a lot of well intentioned, but ultimately off the mark, manufacturers and retailers.I've not heard the sonum, but ...
PS Audio PS1000 to power a large tube amp?
I returned my P1000 to PS Audio and they said it was fine and mailed it back to me. The problem with fuses blowing disappeared when I took the P1000 out of my system. Rather than put it in the garage I traded it in for the Premier, which is suppos...
