what are the "must have" CD's
Wanted to second Mlsstl's suggestion of Taj Mahal. After reading this thread yesterday, I put on the "Dancin the Blues," a disc which contains "Blue Light Boogie." I'd previously thought of it as fun party music, but I found it is unusually well r...
Getting Started
Hi Bad, and welcome! Lot's of good advice above. If you are going to use a computer as a source, why not think about an integrated with a DAC (digital to analog converter)? This might improve your sound; Peachtree audio makes well regarded units t...
Any audiophiles brewing beer?
Mezmo: I think grain done right will get a bit more subtlety and elegance in the beer. But as you say, at a cost cost of mess, difficulty, and complexity in the process. Interestingly, some folks I know started brewing worse beer when the moved fr...
Amarra or upgrade my Wavelength Brick
Sidssp: What do you like better about Pure Vinyl? It's considerably cheaper, isn't it? Last I checked, the full-blown Amarra was 1K, which seems a lot for software. Thx, J
Can Mac/PC compete with High End CDT??
My experience is with lower cost gear than described in the OP, but FWIW:I replaced a heavily modded Musical Fidelity A5 with a Macbook, playing iTunes/AIFF, into a PS Audio Perfect Wave Dac, via a Locus Design Polestar USB cord. I could not do di...
Mahalia Jackson?
Thanks! I'll try these out. John
Why did I get married?
I am inexpert in the reasons people get (and stay!) married, but I agree with the posts above suggesting that the strain over music is likely proxy for the other issues. Maybe a discussion of music habits could lead into other needed discussion. M...
What's the farthest you've traveled for live music
Flew from upstate NY to SF, CA to see Grateful Dead on New Year's eve. No doubt lots of stories like that on this site; the Dead may hold the total fan mileage record. Would not consider anything like that now (and now, unlike then, I can mostly a...
Audio Rack Construction
Well Done, Kenny. On leveling the top shelf: There a school of thought that says that you don't want the nuts on your rack completely tight, and that some feeling of play is better. Can't remember where I heard this, but you might look around; I h...
Any suggestions for good obscure music?
How about Sera Cahoone? A Seattle indie-folk type, sad and lovely songs, recordings might be better, but aren't offensive. "Only as the Day is Long" is a special disc. Definitely a lot more obscure than some of what is mentioned here, though she h...
Modern Jazz Pianist recommendation
Eric Reed and D. D. Jackson are possibilities (both have informative websites).D. D. plays on "The Calling" by Bluiett, Jackson, and El Zabar, which is outstanding.John
Apple Macintosh Music System
"Question...when I import a cd to my itunes which import setting is best as there are several choices in import options?" Many seem to favor AIFF over lossless. Everybody seems to agree that the "error correction" box should be checked. If you don'...
Audio Rack Construction
Yes, I'd go several coats, rubbed hard with four ought steel wool, followed by soft rag, final coat with soft rag. I rushed my table, and the wood is underprotected. The brass will patina if not treated. Not sure what to use, though.
Audio Rack Construction
Hey Kenny. I've not gotten anything like a greenish tint. I think Walnut Oil won't add much color, and will stay pretty "true." The maple for my rack was pretty dark to begin with, with some tints running to reddish. This summer, I refinished the ...
need DAC and Transport or good CD player
Whatever you do, I'd make sure I got something that is implementable in a computer audio set up. Even if you don't now, you may very well eventually find that you want the convenience and the access to hi rez files. (I didn't follow my own advice:...
