Streamer only
Using a PC is NOT a low quality solution, especially if the DAC is of reasonably high quality. The signal from the PC to the DAC is digital. A separate streamer is completely unnecessary for signal quality.
Streamer only
Isn’t anybody going to mention that any old PC or Apple computer could act as a streamer?  If your preamp doesn't have a compatible input, you could buy an inexpensive DAC that would take a USB input from the computer. The DAC would then be connec...
Classical Record Collection Needs New Home
I donated a large collections of 78's to a local college recently,    They were so grateful, and I get a tax break.    The institution in question offered to come get them. Simple, straight forward.  Win - win.
for streaming why not computer/galvanic isolation/DAC clock?
I run Roon on an older Windows 10 laptop. The sound is indistinguishable from that produced by a streamer of any make. I do use a power conditioner for the laptop, the DAC and the pre-amp. An Ethernet connection is preferable, but I use WiFi with ...
Roon Nucleus as a Streamer
I agree with lalitk. There is no need to purchase a separate server if you already own a Windows or Apple computer. I used a ten year old MacAir, on which I installed Roon Core. The resulting digital signal can be conveyed to a Roon-ready DAC (in ...
Hot Rats
Apostrophe, Waka/Jawaka, Sheik Yerbouti, Just Another Band from L.A.... I will miss him always.
New or used speakers
You don't have to spend anywhere near $10K to acquire great used speakers.    The compromise is that you might have to accept that the speakers were manufactured by a company that no longer exists.    If the speakers are good, you can usually find...
Bought powerful/expensive Amp+Speakers but plan to use an old preamp , am I crazy?
You are not crazy.   That's a good preamp.   Of course, a side by side listen is always best.
Who uses ADS Speakers
I bought my first pair of ADS 910 speakers in 1978.  I still have them, although they need to be restored.    I still own pairs of 1590/2's, a pair of 1290's, and a pair of 810's.  The latter three pairs still sound great.     In my opinion, the ...
Check in: How quickly are streamers and servers evolving?
I agree that a high quality DAC is essential.   I don't agree that you need a purpose-built streamer at all.   I run Roon (and Tidal) on a fifteen year old MacBook Air.   The resulting sound quality is terrific.  I find the sound to be indistingui...
Frustrated McIntosh Owner
I've heard, via a different thread, that ARC recently divested itself of the McIntosh brand.  If true, that might also have had some effect on their production schedule.
Ok now I am frustrated with streaming
I agree with Mapman. Wifi problems shouldn’t be causing distortion. When I experience internet/wifi problems, the signal simply cuts out.I hope you held on to your old router and modem. Swap in each of the older components, one at a time, so see i...
Mahavishnu fans only
Also:   I entirely concur with Heilbron's opinion of McLaughlin's "quiet soulful virtuosity of My Goal’s Beyond".   IMO, his cover of "Goodbye Porkpie Hat" is the best of the many versions if that great jazz standard.
Mahavishnu fans only
I had to really think this one through. The Mahavishnu Orchestra sound is ALL refined power. Listen to the Dance of Maya again. Of course, it’s outrageously powerful, but note the structure that drives it. The time signatures. The counterpoint. Sy...
Are Bowers and Wilkins speakers overpriced?
I don't think it's inappropriate to ask if speakers are overpriced, if you answer in relative, rather than absolute terms. For instance, most new B&W's seem overpriced compared to several different models of used / vintage speakers.   I recentl...
