A $300-$400 turntable tweak
Manitunc, Rockitman, magnetic bearings are another thing that I've done experimentation on. In my experience, using the magnets to unload most of the platter weight from the bearing, but leaving some mechanical contact intact sounded the best (a k...
A $300-$400 turntable tweak
Dover:My TT-1000 by itself has a little less mass in the platter system than stock (I needed to shave down the top of the platter to get a flat surface for the graphite mat to bond onto). Add the center clamp, and the net weight ends up pretty clo...
A $300-$400 turntable tweak
Raul:I'm not sure that I completely understand you, but my observations suggest that peripheral, vacuum and center clamps can all be positive, as long as the clamping force that they impart can be adjusted to the needs of the individual situation....
A $300-$400 turntable tweak
Hi Henry:Yes, I've tried various peripheral rim clamps and vacuum clamps (both add-ons and integral). In this case I found that I usually preferred the sound without peripheral or vacuum clamps. Even on my Micro-Seiki SZ-1S, which has a 28kg machi...
A $300-$400 turntable tweak
I most frequently use a Marantz TT-1000 direct-drive turntable with a bonded-on graphite mat and a Graham Phantom II tonearm. In the past I tried a variety of clamps of varying construction, material and weight on this turntable, and have found tha...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
Dear Miner:Regarding trade-in value of a new-ish Delos, I honestly don't know, as each distributor sets their own pricing for retail, trade-ins, upgrades, rebuilds etc. The dealer that you bought the Delos from is probably the best person to ask.R...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
Dear Mordante:While the assembly of the Dorian was initially planned to be outsourced, this plan was cancelled while the cartridge was still in the prototype stage. Every production Dorian has shipped with Mishima's hands-on TLC.The Dorian was ori...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
Dear Rob:More than any other cartridge model, I have been hesitant to design a successor to the Skala. Since it was only put into production in 2006, I would feel guilty about making Skala owners feel that their cartridge has been outmoded so soon...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
In response to Theo "What does Lyra do with the trade-ins?", I've pondered over this question in the past, but so far I've not been able to arrive at a good answer. There are a couple of major reasons for this. One is that our primary limit is our...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
Unfortunately I (as I believe is the case with most other craftsman-oriented audio manufacturers) don't have the large-scale mechanized manufacturing facilities that would allow audio products to be produced at the low prices that Audio-Technica, ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Why don't you try replacing the headshell gasket with a thin sheet of lead, or a short piece of wire solder (not of the lead-free type) formed into a ring of suitable dimensions. Likewise worthwhile is a short piece of copper wire (not of the toug...
Lyra Dorian or Lyra Delos cartridge?
IMHO, the Delos is clearly the superior performer, but by today's pricing standards, the out-of-production Dorian can also be an attractive bargain. The Dorian was phased out because higher fuel, energy, raw material etc., not to mention the Yen's ...
Kleos Sibilance
Dear Robert:If you seriously suspect that something is wrong with your Kleos (rather than setup or component matching), feel free to send it back to us via your dealer and we will be happy to have a look at it.We don't claim to be perfect, but we ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Halcro:Why should it be strange for me to try to contribute something useful to this thread? I have design experience with both fixed-coil and moving-coil cartridges, and I have used and own fixed-coil cartridges like the EPC205, EPC100MkIV, AT24,...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
If you like the FR-6, you may want to try the FR-5E (elliptical stylus). To my ears at least, it's a more convincing performer than the FR-6.
