airport express and dac
Just a small addition to Rooze's answer: You can also use a regular Toslink cable of your choice and add an adaptor like the one below ($2-$4, widely available on-line and at Radio Shack) to make it work with the Airport Express. Mini-Toslink male...
Airport Express compared to High End Transport.
Rooze, At this point you can only use iTunes. AE only "listens" to Apple Lossless format. iTunes translates non-AL files into AL format on the fly to stream to AE.
Better sound quality than the I-pod?
Yes, Larry, iPod is a no-brainer. I'm can't vouch that iPod is absolutely the best in terms of sound, but I cannot see how you would regret purchasing an iPod. Frankly, I think Apple did a very impressive job in voicing the iPod. I agree with Broo...
What's the funniest song you ever heard?
Hell, I'd Go -- Dan Hicks (or one of many others by DH).
I Can't Stop Playing This Song

HELP Turning off the Left Brain
Can't say I've been in your position, but why don't you declare a moratorium on making any changes to your system for a year. I assume you've got quite a good system by now. Let it be. If denied the reward of getting new things to analyze, maybe y...
transparency vs. detailed
"what about a transparent amp with a transparent speaker?" As long as you can see your CD player and your remote, you should be okay. Sorry, Mbbolda. Ketchup is right. These generalizations are too broad and subjective to be helpful. Especially wi...
Unbalanced to balanced adaptor
Thanks for the information. To make the conversion properly does not seem like a simple proposition. I suppose I might also contact the maker of my DAC to see how tolerant it would be of a passive solution. Thanks again.
Unbalanced to balanced adaptor
I should keep an eye on this post Using a adapter to go XLR to RCA . Some suggestions are showing up there. However, does the fact that I'm talking about a digital connection make a difference in adaptors I should consider?
Song intros that really grab you? ?
Opalchip, great call. A single memorable chord. At the other end of the spectrum, I'd nominate the improvised tenor sax and drum intro to Steely Dan's "Everything Must Go." Glorious playing, and really contributes to the meaning of the song (those...
How do you deal with vibration?
Oy. The thing about this thread that's jumped out at me is that Twl has kept his big nose out of it! Actually, I thought he succumbed once, but I probably imagined it. ;->
DAC question -- Importance of good vibes
Thanks very much, Tfk and Jb, for your posts. Maybe my question was too specific to attract many responses. Maybe I should have just asked, "Dude, Which DAC really rocks?!!?" On the other hand, I've already read all the threads that asked that. ;-...
Music from hard drive better than CD?
"Can Foobar be taught to stream audio into the AirportExpress as the iTunes does."I've read that iTunes streams to AX using Apple Lossless and only Apple Lossless...so, no.
Equipment Set-up Recommendations?
Yikes, mon, you're so keen on your nice TT on top of your sharp-looking rack, and you're going to try a concrete block solution? Whoa, keep your head! ;-> I don't want to push Neuance too hard, but given what you'd like to preserve, you might a...
Equipment Set-up Recommendations?
My Rega is perched about as high as your TT on a lightweight steel rack with Neuance shelf (suspended hardwood floor). Neuance is rigid and lightweight. I was very surprised how much it helped with heavy footfall/dancing issues. I wasn't expecting...
