New VPI Classic I vs. good used VPI HW-19 MkIV.
The MK IV, III, and II, were a bit darker in tone due to the suspension on springs. The Classic 1 uses the new feet with isolation and they are able to isolate from vibrations and be tighter and quicker in sound. I like all of them and if you have...
$10 vs $100 power plug
Most people don't realize that the AC outlets on their prized line conditioner is put together with AC outlets that are of the .49 cent variety, and the wire attaching to it is contacting a surface the thickness of a credit card, and loose contact...
$10 vs $100 power plug
The difference is the spring tension and plating surface. My preference is Rhodium. The surface is expensive to implement, but hard and less scratch prone. The typical brass surface is fine the first few uses, but scratches and leaves mars in the ...
Looking for a power conditioner/regenerator/filter
The problem is not when the lights go out but when they come back on with a big surg od power and everything gets slammed. Usually a big DC thump which is great on tweeters. Surge protection is good, even at some marginal audio sacrifice. MOV's ar...
Looking for a power conditioner/regenerator/filter
I just received my Plasmatron from vh audio and strongly recommend a listen before any big purchases. Mine has 4 Furutech Rhodium outlets and will manage 3 amps or approx. 360 watts. A preamp is usually pulling 60-90 watts a DA converter 20-50 wat...

Power plant and power cords upgrades a real wow?
Serious money into cords/conditioners without dedicated 20A lines is like hauling bricks in a Ferrari. Sure you can do it, but not the best way to spend your money. Get two good lines, good plugs like Furutech or Oyaide, etc., and then think of co...
Is the CD and DVD/Bluray going away?
Cd will go away the way vinyl has. It hasn't and won't for years. Downloads will be just another alternative but a growing one and getting better. Sooner or later I will get into it but it will likely be in a year or two. The technology is maturin...
What made the biggest, most noticeable improvement
Well matched amp/speaker. If I spend 5k on a power cord my wife will slap me, then the lobotomy, after securing the credit card.
Recommended Soldering Iron
I like using Cardas lead silver solder with a little copper. A joy to work with . Lead free solder is useless. Too narrow a temperature flow range. Resolder a lead free joint and you get moonscape. The fumes are not lead but flux, and you should n...
Do not buy any Sonus Faber used
If the speakers are dead, send the tweeter to Orange County Speaker for possible repair. Or, ask Madisound for a clone or alternative replacement. I would not hesitate to get a similar spec tweeter with more wpc rating if it blew. It may be crosse...
Cost of running a tube amp.
Get a class d amp for background music and use tubes when the lisyening is serious. Better yet, get a class T amp from parts express at a hundred or so. Little energy, little cost, and the tubes are there when you can sit for some magic. Jallen
How do I smooth out violins?
Need tubes somewhere. Try a cj or quicksilver preamp or something similiar first.
