Lifespan of a quality solid state amplifier? Too many variables,.... room size, listening level, speaker efficency, speaker efficency, etc. Bryston is at least 20 yrs. Otbers vary. Pass is very good, bullet proof in fact, but with all ss equipment, one transistor failure, replacement is not ...
Maintenance for Tube Preamps Rrog and sibelius offer good avdice. Cramolin, is great at first, then leaves black goo...not good. Clean and connect. Change tubes when noise is an issue. Jallen
Tube amp stopped working Replace with your known working stock tubes, provided they were working. Always have on hand a working set of tubes to check against. My guess, one or more bad new tubes if the old ones worked. Jallen
Hey Electricians - Please help Dimmers and fluorescent lights are not audio friendly. Change the switch. I just changed all the plugs and switches in my house, and you would not believe how bad the contacts were in the house wiring. Some of the wires turned bluish from too much...
Maggie speakers and bi-amping I have had the 3.6 single and biwired and both are good if enough power is used. If the room is not too big, then 250wpc is fine with the exception of demo discs with tanks, jets, trains etc. A good pass labs, coda, bryston 4bst or sst, c, and oth...
Mono blocks that can provide that golden sound... Try an audition with the quicksilver silver 88. Ridiculous price new, but magical sounding and reliable. If you are in the SF Bay area, you can try mine for a couple of hours. Jallen

Audio Technica AT150MLX finally gets some respect I have recommended this cartridge for years. It is much better than the Shure was. Only weakness is a fragile styli...no clumbsy fingers....jallen
Tube amps with Apogee Scintilla's your thoughts ? I. This case, the transistor is king....krells are the choice. 2. Clip an amp into them and you might not be happy. Jallen
Tube Life I have a friend using 6sn7tubes in the amp input and they are 15 years old. Working well, no noise or problems. Use until noise is an issue. Life ends with noise for me. Jallen
A question for Maggie owners You will need the maggies at least 3 ft. from the back wall and or treat the back wall for depth enhancement. The stage will be more lifelike in height. The maggies are very fast as well, but bass lacks weight, but has slam. Jallen
Favorite Caps ST-70 Rebuild I have heard the V-caps in both modes and they are as described above. I have a warm amp and the TFTF are great. I have another amp and the CU are wonderful in that one. Both are better than any other caps I have heard. If they can fit in, use the...
Bandwidth question? Down 3db at 100khz or 300khz is insignifcant. Down 3db is good in that it is designed to reduce oscilation tendencies. At what power is the amp rated at, what is the power output at max or rated power vs. Frequency response and distortion. Measure...
Aerial 10T MK2 switch to active xover and/or more? Xover is fine. Get a Bryston 4BSST, and some good speaker cable ten or twelve awg and they will sing, mine sure do. A tube preamp is great as well. I like my 10 t's very well. Jallen
Cardas Golden Ref or the AU24e cables??? With tubes, use the Neutral Reference. GR is a bit warm, better for SS equipment. Neutral Ref. is great with tubes. |
