have you ever bought stereo without listening first
Yes.   But I tend to read reviews and look for consensus opinion.  IE- if one reviewer considers a piece to be the best ever, while other reviewers say it is just -ok- then maybe it is just -ok-.    Or if all reviews, across multiple platforms etc...
Why no interest in reel to reel if you're looking for the ultimate sound?
All of those great LPs recorded pre 1985 were recorded on RtR decks.  In the 80's we discovered that original master tapes contained much more information than was pressed into original LP grooves.  In fact we discovered that many classic, indeed ...
Bookshelf speaker for an apartment
OK Focal Aria 906.   Good Choice and a great choice given the price I see on the A4L website.  Others mentioned KEF LS50, and at current prices a downright bargain.I would have suggested QUAD S1 or S2.  Small ported bookshelf speakers, with ribbon...
Audio discounts during Coronavirus
Deals will get better as sellers become more desperate. There is talk of a 6% global decline in GDP, that could get worse depending on how long economies are shut down.
RIP Art Dudley
WoW. What a loss for all of us. He was funny, cantankerous, opinionated, subversive....you can pile on adjectives to describe. The best would probably be unique. His family lost a husband and father, we lost a friend and mentor. He intuitively u...
My list of seller red flags
Great.  Another buyer that wants everything on a silver platter.  NIB, with receipt, 1080P or 4K quality pictures and a description that reads like an audio review.   For a price that is 50% of FMV....for a used item.   Guess what, we ALL want tha...

How far away from your speakers are you?
Good question.   I have 2 listening areas.   Main, for my primary system.  Secondary, for my computer system. My listening room is 30ft x 12ft, roughly divided in 2.   Approximately 1/2 is for equipment and listening.  Approximately 1/2 is for an o...

what's your opinion on the magazine 'stereo review'??
Several posted links to american radio history.  This is a great site that has a downloadable library of SR, and High Fidelity, and Audio, and many other wonderful magazines.   Take some time and go through the back issues, paying specific attenti...
Speakers that can reveal orchestral instruments' positions
My answer to the original question is YES.  However the degree to which one can hear specific locations within a soundstage is dependent on the quality and synergy of equipment used.I hear width, depth and height from my system, in my room.My refe...
Stereo Receivers from the past...
It appears the speakers are of moderate efficiency, but a low impedance load that varies a bit across the spectrum.  These speakers will require current and an amp that is stable into low impedance loads.  Listening space is of small to moderate s...
Guest suddenly takes it upon herself to move my speakers
Audio aside, the scenario would be the same if a guest moved a picture on a host's wall to get a better look.  A guest in a home is not automatically given tacit permission to do what every they want.  A good host makes guests feel comfortable, a ...
Disappointing On Mcintosh......help
Interesting thread.  I recently commissioned full restoration of a MX110z, 225, and 240 and will have an opportunity to listen very soon.   I have heard MAC tube equipment before, and of course their SS models.  I am generally not a fan of most of...
Selling locally/Value questions
You are in CT, thus in the NYC metro area; one of the largest metro areas in the US. If what you have is even remotely desirable, and priced fairly, then you should have no problem selling locally. Pricing fairly implies that you know what you...
