How important is the cable between the SUT and phono pre?
Would love to see a cite with a detailed technical explanation. You are looking too deep into it.  This is the simplest basic transformer theory and the simple ideal transformer model is all that is required.  The problem you are having is assu...
How important is the cable between the SUT and phono pre?
However, transformers do not reflect secondary load C to the primary.    They absolutely do reflect any capacitance seen on the secondary by the turns ratio squared.  Say you have 150pf (50p cable + 100p input)  at the secondary of a 1:20 SUT. ...
Silver v Copper wire phono cable
Silver ADDS a 5khz to 8khz rise, even though slight, that creates a hardness / harshness to the signal. I’ll side with Lew here and until I see verifiable documentation of this I call BS. Recall that it is possible in an A / B test to detect ...
Who needs a Diamond Cantilever...? 💍
Broken Picture Link From Above showing new vs. vintage mounts. Not to go too far off topic but why isn't boron tubing still available?  Obviously Namiki can deal with zirconia tube so the boron tube if available shouldn't be a stretch today.  A few...
Who needs a Diamond Cantilever...? 💍
Chakster,I am only trying to address your statement that i loosely interpret as 'they do not mount diamonds like they used to'.  Here are the pictures of your historical examples along side current offerings from Namiki and I do not see any apprec...
Who needs a Diamond Cantilever...? 💍
Chakster...  Your argument seems to be that boron pipe is no longer available.  I agree.  The rest of your argument makes no sense.  If you are saying nobody nude mounts like your boron pipe example, namiki does it with zirconium tube.  Both Namik...
Who needs a Diamond Cantilever...? 💍
Chakster,I agree that the boron pipe and beryllium are no longer available but I was referring to the quoted text for my response. The way the vintage cantilever and stylus mounted together is different from almost anything new.Aside from the one p...

The way the vintage cantilever and stylus mounted together is different from almost anything new.Not sure what you are getting to on this but here are Namiki's current offerings.  The retipped boron cantilever you refer to looks suspiciously close...
Running LOMC with MM (47K) loading
I don't see any mechanism for the electrical loading somehow affecting the mechanical movement of the cantilever. It is common knowledge that when you ship a speaker, you should short the terminals because it provides a "dynamic brake" which limits...
Mono Reissues and the Conical Stylus
Would never go back to the conical. IMO it is an audiophile myth that conical is the way to go with vintage mono. I agree 100%.  Just because the conical was the tool of the day to play mono doesn't mean the advanced profiles would have been shunn...
Cable from SUT to Phono Preamp
The interface from the SUT to the phono stage is a low level high impedance node the the goal here is to use a short, shielded, low capacitance cable.  The need for shielding is a noise pickup thing and is at odds with the low capacitance goal.  K...
Stylus shapes!
My favorite part is the diagram that shows how the effective tracking angle changes with the different stylus shapes. That is indeed exactly what happens. Regardless of stylus shape the effective tracking angle is constantly changing, sometimes dr...
Help me understand compliance!
I think the difference between #5 and #6  is that #5 refers to a mismatch of a low compliance cart to a low mass arm and #6 refers to the mismatch of a high compliance cart to a high mass arm.Either way... the big thing that is overlooked by every...
Help me understand compliance!
I find the Korf Audio blog post linked above to be very interesting and am surprised nobody makes note of the fact that he seems to call out the "way everyone does it" as flawed.  I have tried to back out the actual compliance from other know para...
L-Pads. Speakers Awful Without Them, New Ones Ordered
Hey Erik,Paul Klipsch must be one of those scoundrels because he routinely used autoformers for level matching and in keeping up with the scoundrels...I for one think all L-pads and resistive networks for attenuation should be binned in favor of a...
