Single driver speakers. Are they worth considering ?
I used 15 Ohm Lowther DX2 in home-made Fidelio boxes for almost a decade, finally just wanted a change.Still, I am keeping them, as they do some things right; there is even some [illusion of] bass (with a SET amp). However, they only sound right wi...
Mark Levinson 333 (recapped)
I see that opinions are still divided ;-)I am sticking to no. 23 - and I’ve got a no. 27:I needed a preamp, a man was selling a nice no. 28, but only as a set with his no. 27; the price was right, so I got them.I must say I prefer the sound of no....
Why do people care what their speaker wants?
When I switched to Lowther Fidelios (well, actually when I paired them with 300B SET, bass was too shy with solid state), I noticed that there was a synergy between them and wind instruments.I cannot say I cared, but the synergy was there, it was ...
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
- Just to clarify “would” or “would not” be compatible?I like spaciousness of MBLs a lot - they just fill the room. However, they excited vertical room mode, Even with that caveat MBL bass is ok.Then Gradients showed me that bass can be more tunef...
We spend too much time talking about tweeters
I sort of prefer omnidirectional heights. Not much choice there though, mainly German (MBLs, German Physiks DDD, and Elac super tweeter).
Can anybody be a speaker designer?
Actually I am giving a try to a DIY pair .... so far I am not at all sure that my result will be any good, but I wanted to try anyway. As for the shiny box recipe, https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2ol1ge
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
I will go active in bass and relieve MBLs from 100 Hz downwards: my 101s are super old and have no bassreflex box, which current 101s have; MBL themselves suggested pairing with their active MBL 201, but I will try home-made dipoles instead (I fin...
Can flexible power cables sound good?
Hoping to not provoke the eternal cable debate, I do not see how could I overcome the shortcomings of the 15-25 feet of cheap power cables in my apartment walls (on top of at least 50 feet from the main breaker and meter in the basement) by spendi...
Bigger drivers = bigger soundstage
If I think about your particular case, presuming classic [monopole] bass reflex boxes with cone drivers for low and mid + dome tweeters, smaller drivers can move less air, thus they may sooner run out of their capacity to produce undistorted sound...
Bigger drivers = bigger soundstage
There is so much more to that than just the driver size...Longer time ago I had a smaller room, smth like 8’4 by 14’, 10’4 ceiling, old apartment building. It could be filled by bookshelves with 6” drivers. Floorstanders with 10” were just too muc...
For the Audiophile with a taste for good design(looks)....a question.
I have no good looking sources, unless I count Altmann Tera Player; Mac Mini does not count, either. Pass D1 DAC is not bad looking (as well as that generation of preamps).I like the looks of Pass Labs Aleph power amps, esp. the big ones (Aleph 1,...
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
Thank you all for input!I will live with ML 23 for now, possibly sell Aleph 4 and look out for MORE POWER https://tenor.com/view/toolman-taylor-tim-allen-homeimprovement-gif-5701538
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
Looked up 'EPDR resistance' -- thanks for the tip!Stereophile has a good article in their archive, that clarifies a lot, among other things sets in perspective use of tubes (300B with a 6 Ohm tap really did not work too well, in 2 Ohm 'epdr' resis...
MBL 101 (~1990) - amp suggestions.
Currently I use MBLs in open living area, 6 x 7.5  x 2.5 m (or 20' x 25' x 8'4), Room has large windows, at  it's other end it opens to upper floor ( ~2 x 3 m / 7' x 10' "hole") + extends into a hall (1.2 x 4.5 m / 4 x 15 feet), not empty space (o...

On MF AMS50:interesting in general, but I don’t see it working from a technical pont:76w in 4 Ohm do not seem to do the trick @ 80 dB/W (or even 80 dB/2.83V).To R.:in ‘cost no object’ situation I’d start with a pair of ML 33 and see if they are an...
