Ortofon 309 vs. SME 3012 for SPUs Ortofon will say their current ST-80 SE ($1600) would be a best match, and Verto ($1000) would be good too.SUTs based on Hashimoto transformers may worth a look. Or Bob's device?
Ortofon 309 vs. SME 3012 for SPUs I also have heard/read that SPU Silver Meister (earlier one, not MKii) is one of the best matches with Ortofon RMG 309.To enjoy the old SPU sound, SPU Classic GM E MKii may be good enough. Most other SPUs cost twice as much, and I wonder whether t...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? How would Ortofon 540MKii par with Ortofon MC20 + T20 (or MCA76)? If it is as good as or better than MC20, it would be a real bargain at under $300.
Cartridge for my system? Your wisdom is needed I have Ortofon SL15 e MKii running with Ortofon MCA76 phono amp. It sounds pretty good, beating my friend's Denon 103R. I also have MC20 and MC100, all of them quite as good as SL15 e MKii. Each of these old Ortofon catridges in NOS or in very goo...
Audio Desk Record Cleaner Before investing tons of money, I would try Spin Clean Record Washer ($80) and wood glue method (Franklin International 5005 Titebond II Premium Wood Glue, $12 for 32oz, good for cleaning 100+ LPs).For LPs looking clean but generating pops and oth...

phono pre suggestions With $6,000, you can have a system like mine. BAT vk-60 ($1500), BAT vk-30 with phono card and remote ($2000), and Tyler Linbrook signature systems speakers ($2500), all used.I doubt any other system at $6K would be much better than mine.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Between Ortofon T20 and MCA76, I initially liked T20 better because MCA76 sounded a bit bass heavy, but with more listening, now I like MCA76 better. T20 is a bit more modest than MCA76. I feel the music more alive and colorful, and the sound stag...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? And, MC20 gives more bass. AT150mlx is good on highs, but sometimes I feel it lacks bass, and a bit too bright. MC20 is not as bright as AT150mlx. On certain rock albums like Jimi Hendrix, which has a lot of guitar distortion and metal sound, I pr...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? On my system, MC20 with MCA76 or T20 provides sound with more depth and detail. In full orchestration or 50~60s jazz, I feel the sound from MC20 is more full and real. (Sorry, I cannot describe any better.)Yes, I have Garrard 301 with Ortofon RMG ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? My last MM cartridges were AT150mlx and Grado Prestige Gold. Now I use Ortofon MC20 and SL15E MKII with Ortofon T20 SUT and MCA76 phono amp.MC20 (used in very good condition) + T20 (or SLE15E MKII + MCA76, or any other combo) can be bought at arou...
Can a $3K table be among the best out there? Without a cartridge, a good working Thorens TD124 or Garrard 301 with birch wood plinth and a 12" Ortofon or SME arm may cost around $3,000~3,500. Not many TTs at under $4K would beat that, if any.
Newbie needs advice One way to start is to buy a used Thorens turntable (145, 150, 160, 165) at $200~300, and a (good) budget cartridge at around $100 (Shure M97xE). $100 phono preamp will beat the phono section in the Marantz receiver. Buying used records may not be...
Garrard 301/401 audition request Setting up a full best working 301 would not be a cheap task. With 301, you may want to invest $300+ for a plinth (like a heavy birch wood plinth), and a real good tonearm for $1500+ (like Ortofon RMG 309 or SME 3012 tonearm), and a real good cart...
Mismatch - between SUT and MC cartridge. Thanks.I guess I need to spend more time to understand your explanation. Overall, it seems to work fine to my ears. |
