Why recordings made before 1965 sound better.
Early stereo recordings of orchestral material might sound better because a few of the best recording engineers of that era were simply trying to capture what the conductor and musicians were creating within the great sounding venues of that time ...
Small Footprint SS Power Amps
Quad 405 or 405-2.  100 watt per channel current dumping power amp.  13-3/8" wide by 7-3/4" deep by 4-1/4" high.  The heat sink is in the front so side ventilation is not an issue.  With a Dada Electronics revision kit and Dada's DC protection/del...
Reel to Reel Woes
Assuming your tapes are 2 channel 4 track (1/4 track) 7-1/2 ips recordings, you might also consider a ReVox A77 MkIV.  These machines are quite good and in some instances a little easier to service in that the record amps and reproduce amps are on...
If your were to assemble a vintage system ?
I would acquire a Quad 405 amp and a Quad 33 preamp, then rebuild them and add the DC/delay option offered by Dada.  For a turntable, a Technics SL-7 and some P-mount Ortofon cartridge or a Thorens TD-150 or the like and an Ortofon M2 Blue.  Speak...
Suggest one obsure album we all should hear
Bald Bill Hagen and his Trocaderons Play Music to Strip By.I heard this on an Infinity Servo Static One system 50 years ago and was blown away.
How I'd spend money given no limits
Season tickets for several world class symphony orchestras plus all the necessary 1st class round trip tickets and lodging for me and a select few of my classical music loving friends.
What's the best and/or favorite piece of equipment you've owned? And do you still own it?
From an appearance perspective, the nicest piece of equipment I have owned was a JBL SA-660 integrated amplifier.  It was an amazing example of beautiful industrial design.  Wish I still had it.
1st Album you Ever Owned?
Van Cliburn - Tchaikovsky Concerto #1, Rachmaninoff Concerto #2 on RCA.  Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd - Jazz Samba on Verve. Both mono and I still have them.
the sound of massed violins in classical orchestral recordings
Personally, I think the dispersion characteristics of the mid and HF driver(s) is critical in regard to addressing your concerns.  Assuming fairly flat and smooth response of the associated components, the proximity of presentation should reflect ...
the sound of massed violins in classical orchestral recordings
Three factors come to mind.  1.  Microphones used, pickup pattern of those mics and miking technique.  Having made many orchestral recordings using a variety of mics and miking techniques and in a variety of halls, it has been my experience that t...
What are the sexiest components ever made?
JBL SA-660 integrated amp and of course the JBL Paragon
The very best sound: Direct to Disc
I still have a sealed copy of Dave Grusin Discovered Again.  Also have an unsealed copy I have listened to.  I did sell one of two copies of the original Lincoln Mayorga DtoD with the Scully lathe on the cover for over $300.  I can't understand wh...
Jazz for aficionados
Bobby Hutcherson - "The Kicker" - Joe Henderson, Grant Green, Duke Pearson, Bob Cranshaw, Al Harewood.  Recorded at Van Gelder's in 1963.
WHat did Audiophiles hear during Tape deck era?
As good as some of the higher end compact cassette machines got, the pre-recorded cassettes always suffered from the limitations of the high speed duplication process used to record them.  If you were making your own recordings, you could achieve ...
Classical Music for Aficionados
London CS 6533.  Sonata for Two Pianos and Variations for Two Pianos on a Theme of Beethoven.  Bracha Eden and Alexander Tamir. This is a must for piano enthusiasts as it was performed on a Pleyel double piano.  This very rare instrument was actua...
