Do loudspeakers need to be Refurbished? All speakers (drivers), regardless of brand name, fatigue with age. That is, the voice coils on the drivers sag which affects the sound quality. This will occur in virtually every driver (speaker) that is 10 to 20 years old. The obvious remedy is ...
Anyone compare Dunlavy vs Aerial I can't agree with the above posts. I own Dunlavys' and they are far superior to the other speakers you mention. They do not require 400 watt amps. In fact, a friend uses 15 Watt (Yes, 15 Watt) tube amps on Dunlavy SC-V's with great results. I use...
Dunlavy SC IIs John, you can stay within your budget and purchase Dunlavy SC-III's used. Three way, five driver. I also use a subwoofer with them (although not required) and the results are outstanding. Far superior to anything I have heard in the $10K - 15K range.
You got to show me something more! The best jazz musicians I ever met all had classical training and there is no question that classical music IS the most technically challenging. Show me any jazz musician who can compose or play counterpoint like Bach. Jazz musicians are imitators...
CD: 100+ Threads, no answers I purchased the newest version of the Toshiba SD-2200 DVD player, new, for $300. It has HDCD and 24/96 PCM, etc. Out of curiousity, I used it as a source in my high-end audio system, temporarily replacing a MicroMega transport and a Cal Audio Alph...
carpeting The acoustic properties of wool are superior to any other fabric or synthetic material. However, any type of carpeting will be better than bare wood floors. Without carpeting of some kind you will have substantial reflections off the floor. I had ...
Reel to Reel: Treasure or Trash? I still use reel to reel. How many tapes do you have and what condition are they in ??
Cheater plugs with amplifiers? The prospective fire hazard is less than the prospective electrocution hazard. But eliminating the ground loop problem by using cheater plugs is an accepted audiophile risk.
Know of a "Dirt Cheap" tweak? Khrys, people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Sometimes its the bad speakers that are at fault , especially the million dollar ones.
Your Listening chair The headrest causes the early reflections you mention, particularly if it extends on either side of your head just past the ears. If you can modify the size of the headrest so that it supports the back of your head only, you can eliminate the soun...
granite base for speakers Seriously, concrete blocks are one of the best methods of dampening your system. It doesn't take much creativity to disguise them, i.e., a wood surround, or paint, etc. In fact, all of my amps (10 of them) are now on concrete blocks approx. 2 feet...
granite base for speakers I use concrete blocks as a base for my Dunlavy speakers (the blocks are painted for WAF). This raised the speakers 7" -8" off the ground and so I had to raise the sofa to match the height difference. ( with concrete blocks also, not appreciated by...
1 million dollar speaker made by Kharma Wait !!! Don't spend all your money yet !! Kharma has just announced that the Enigma Oremus II is on its way at a slightly lower retail price, but with just the same features as the Grand Enigma. The drivers are made in China to the same high stan...
What makes / defines an audiophile ? An audiophile is a guy/gal who spends $150.00 on a tube and thinks they got a bargain.
The fallacy of ac treatment The last ten feet has become critical for high-end systems because the manufacturers of those systems have provided the consumer with the lowest quality power cords possible. Hence the need to purchase and use 10 gauge or 8 gauge cords in order to... |
