Curved and Straight Tonearms
What brf and Lewm said is correct... and now add helomech. No manufacturer would make a curved arm if the industry did not adopt the SME style headshell that has no offset angle. The ONLY reason to make a curved arm is to have the offset angle a...

My personal experience with Direct Drive versus Belt Drive
Harold,  I'm not a scientist so whatever theory you heard from me is probably half-baked so you don't have to take me too seriously. I know I don't! :)  I'm just an experimenter whenever I have too much time on my hands. Of course you can try anyt...
My personal experience with Direct Drive versus Belt Drive
Lew & Chris, I mentioned the VPI TNT 3 pulley design only as an extreme example of the multiple pulley genre. I agree it's gimmicky and pulleys make noise too. Three pulleys create too much empty spaces and not enough contact area for platter ...
My personal experience with Direct Drive versus Belt Drive
Lewm: "if I was still interested in belt drive for my own use, would be two motors positioned at opposite sides of the platter, 180 degrees apart, so as to equalize the forces involved in rotating the platter through a belt connection." I would ...
My personal experience with Direct Drive versus Belt Drive
harold-not-the-barrel: "hiho, with all due respect I just get the impression that you are living in a world of theories and your illusions. My direct rim drive does the trick for me."As long as it does the trick for you, that's all that matters. I...
My personal experience with Direct Drive versus Belt Drive
Lewm: "IMO, the rim drive is the worst of both worlds, not the best of both.  Mechanical vibrational energy from the motor is transmitted right into the platter with no belt to isolate one from the other.  At the same time, the typical rubbery c...
Vintage DD turntables. Are we living dangerously?
ddriveman: 09-12-2016 2:21am  "...one remaining disadvantage of DDs over belt drives i.e. motor vibrations going up the spindle." It is NOT motor vibration. It is bearing noise, which can happen in any drive system, whether it is direct-drive, b...

TT101 is just the motor drive with no plinth and no arm whereas the GT2000 is a complete integrated turntable. The prices should be different. The TT61, TT71, and TT81 do not use coreless motors and from my experience with TT71, while it's good so...

Most Yamaha DD tables use JVC coreless motors. I took a looksie at the motors of Yammy tables I owned before (PX-2, PX-3, YP-D4) and they all use JVC coreless motors. And judging by the pictures I saw of the GT-2000, the motor appears to be JVC co...

Do top Idler drive tables fall short to top belt drives in any particular area.
Lewm: "Hiho, I don't see how the Garrard geometry alleviates the issue of out-of-round wheels. If its interfacing rubber wheel goes out of round, you would have speed instability just the same." You are right that out of round wheel would presen...

I must point out the Reed drive system is a different genre from the traditional idler drive turntable like Garrard 301 or EMT 930. The idler wheel is part of the pulley and motor on Reed, whereas in a Garrard the motor shaft drives the idler whee...

Halcro, I am using a Signet TK5Ea. Stylus is on its last leg and gotta find a suitable substitute. Any option if I can't find or afford an original, perhaps certain Audio Technical model replacements?Rwwear: The only F6 I had was switching between...
