How much difference does a phono preamp really make?
Assuming your cartridge is decent enough, I would get a well reviewed and revered phono stage that’s within your budget that allows that cartridge to be all it can be. If at that time you sense that it could be better, upgrade your cartridge. Sinc...
EAT E-Glo Petite Hybrid phono stage
I have no experience with the Sutherland, but I can’t imagine it outshining the Petit with the right tubes. I would get the Petit with an 18v Chinese linear power supply for around $120 and spend the difference on nos tubes with the savings of the...

“So I am using the Rega Ania Pro on an RP6 and have solid state Rega Aria preamp.  Will i see improvement going to one of these tube preamps?  I have no tubes in my set up.” I had a ss Parasound jc3+ phono pre and it was excellent. The problem wa...
What phono preamp are you using?
I’m running my Soundsmith Paua2 es into a Modwright PH 9.0X (set to 470 ohms) with Valvo E88cc NOS tubes from 1964. These tubes have proven to be the absolute best with some close runner ups, such as the NOS Bel/India 6922 made by Philips, Siemens...
Parasound vs Emotiva
I have an A23+ and it just does everything right. It sounds correct to my ear in my calibrated audio system. It beat the living hell out of a $3000 Class D Gan amp. The Parasound A23+ had more impact, better mids, tighter bass and a sweeter top en...

I verified they are round halo getters for my 1959 Baldwins.

“I mean, ink black background with the volume cranked with the Petit set at 65 db gain using my Hana MC cart. Sound was crystal clear, vocal texture detail came through nicely, and elements like reverbs really seemed to extend deep, giving me the ...

“I think 7 different sets in total. I kept coming back to the new production Gold Lions.” I also have the Gold lions. They are very good current production tube as used in the Petit, but don’t quite have that nice tonality of the 59 Baldwins (per...

I should add that with my Soundsmith zephyr 3 cartridge (2.4mv) output, the best setting for the Petit with the 1959 Baldwin tubes are 50db gain and 50 pf and no rings on the tubes,  although 150 pf works if you want a little more zing that doesn’...

“I just ordered the 9.0X . I also have a pair of Siemens E188CC/7308 gold pins coming. Curious, Did you upgrade the PC or Fuse. I don’t see anything listed about fuse value or if it’s even worth doing.” I did not not change fuse, but I did change...

So, I found a great deal on the Eat Petit and as good as my DS2 sounds with the Baldwin 1960 tubes, I sold it. The Petit with the stock tubes is very good. A little less grain and a slightly larger soundstage than the ds2, but it just didn’t have ...
Your Favorite Sounding Power Amp, $5000 US Retail max.
Parasound A23+ or A21+, depending on your power needs. They will connect you with the music and get your toes tapping…something Class D Gan amps don’t do, ime.
McIntosh- Sweetest, Smoothest sounding Solid State ?
“i currently have a parasound a21+ driven by a cary audio SLP 05 tube preamp.   i liked the parasound at first but after 7 months or so it is sounding slightly sibilant and less refined.” I’ve had a Parasound A23+ for well over a year now and it’...

“Some great choices here. I'm thinking about the Modwright PH9.0x. Does anyone have any experience with this one in relation to the others mentioned? I do own one of Dan's modded SACD players and love it.” I have thePH9.0x upgraded from the PH9.0...
Herron Audio VTPH-2A - Modwright PH 9.0X - Icon audio ps1 mkii
I haven’t heard the Herron, but I do own the Modwright 9.0X. With the right tubes    (Bel/India in my case and are the same as Philips SQ in my case), I’d put it up against any phono pre at twice its price.
